Robinson running for more than record
Northwest football coach Weston Schartz often talks about running back Demarcus Robinson as a good person.
So Schartz wasn't surprised last week when Robinson, who has been battling an injured ankle, chose to pull himself out of Northwest's regular-season finale to save his ankle for the playoffs.
Derby (6-3) plays at Northwest (7-2) at 7 tonight.
That decision ended Robinson's chance at breaking the City League's single-season rushing record. Robinson, who has made an oral commitment to Kansas State, was 210 yards from breaking Bryce Brown's record of set 1,873 yards in 2008.
"He would have broken it last week if we would have kept him in," Schartz said. "He said, 'For what reason? The big game is next week.'
"That's just the way he is."
Robinson will play tonight, but Schartz doesn't know if he's 100 percent.
"Obviously, when you have a guy like him, you want him healthy and playing," Schartz said. "But we have two good backups... we'll be OK."
Derby could be without wide receiver/defensive back Devin Hedgepeth, who suffered a concussion in last week's loss to Heights. Hedgepeth has made an oral commitment to Oklahoma State.
Record breaker — All season, Chase running back Jake Kizzar battled injuries. But in Chase's final game last Friday, a 93-60 victory over Burrton, he didn't play like it.
Kizzar broke the state's 8-man rushing record by 12 yards. He finished with 613 yards on 32 carries. Kizzar also had 11 touchdowns — 10 rushing and one kickoff return.
"He was just doing what Jake normally does," Coach Otis Hendryx said. "He was finally healthy this year.... He just played a great game, and the line did a really good job for him."
Seven of Kizzar's touchdown runs were for 24 or more yards, with the longest a 78-yard run. He didn't have a carry for loss.
Kizzar finished the season with 1,368 rushing yards on 76 carries.
Haviland's Bryan Kendall had 601 yards in a 1974 game.
