Football 2014: Campus Colts

Published August 21 at 2 p.m. | Last updated August 18 at 10:24 a.m.

Campus football coach Greg Slade joked with John Becker last week, remarking how he’d seen his senior quarterback more than his own family lately.

Because Becker comes from a football crazed family – his mother, Shawn, hung a plaque in their house that reads, “We Interrupt This Family For Football Season” – the words were music to his years.

“(Slade) expects a lot out of us, wants us to be accountable all the time,” Becker said. “So right now, it’s all about changing the culture. That’s the goal for the upperclassmen. Change how things have been around here. Having (Slade) around the last couple of years has been great.”

Things haven’t been great around Campus lately. The Colts have gone 1-8 three of the last five seasons, including last year, Slade’s first season since coming to Haysville from Rose Hill.

The Colts dropped their first seven games by an average of 42 points before showing signs of life in a 34-21 loss to Wichita South in their penultimate game and then, finally, a 28-24 win over North in the season finale.

“We feel like we’ve improved quite a bit ... we feel like we’re making the right steps to move forward,” Slade said. “We had one game, last year, that we could ride into the offseason. We feel like just by changing how we do things, by making summer weights and practices important, we’re going to see some change.”

Becker, entering his second year as a full-time starter, sees those things on a much more visceral level.

“If we’re lifting in groups and the bar isn’t moving, or if the buzzer goes off and you don’t switch, that’s push-ups,” Becker said. “If we walk to the line, there’s a goal line we’ll be running to.

“Everything is focused on our first game against Newton. We’re entirely focused on being 1-0.”

John Becker on his team

What Campus does well: “We’re good on screen plays. That seems to be the one where we’re all on each assignment correctly.”

What Campus has to improve: “When we get scored on, we can’t hang our heads. We need to know we can come back and match what the other team did.”
