5A soccer: Kapaun edges Carroll for third place after four overtimes, shootout

With both Kapaun Mount Carmel and Bishop Carroll struggling to get up and down the field by the end of the fourth overtime of the scoreless Class 5A girls soccer third-place game on Saturday, penalty kicks were the only way to decide the game.

And the Crusaders had a little more left in their legs as they won the penalty kick battle 4-1.

Senior defender Erika Gursney scored the game-winning PK and was immediately mobbed by her teammates. Other penalty kick scorers for Kapaun were Hayley Shepherd, Maggie Kelly and Courtney Kempf. Kelsey Andrews was Kapaun’s goalkeeper.
