Small classes: Hillsboro boys fall in 2A opener

The Hillsboro Trojans had a rough shooting day. Combine that with a hot game from Olpe’s shooters and Hillsboro was eliminated in the Class 2A boys quarterfinals at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.

Olpe shot 59 percent, making 23 of 39 shots, to defeat Hillsboro 59-42 on Thursday. Both teams are 20-3.

Olpe led 31-18 at halftime and extended the lead to 19 points by the end of the third quarter.

Christian Ratzlaff led Hillsboro in scoring with 14 points, but missed 9 of 14 shots and 5 of 6 three-point tries. Evan Ollenburger added nine points.

Olpe out-rebounded Hillsboro 34-17.

Class 1A-I girls

St. Paul 49, Caldwell 34 — Caldwell was held to 12 first-half points and seven in the decisive third quarter, when St. Paul built a 38-19 lead in the quarterfinals at Emporia. Tyann Isaacs had 11 points to lead Caldwell (17-6), which made 9 of 34 shots.

Class 1A-II girls

Baileyville 51, Attica 35 — Attica trailed by five entering the fourth quarter but was outscored 18-7 in the final period at Hays. Brooke Ricke led the Bulldogs with 17 points and seven rebounds. Lauren Sudbeck had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Baileyville, which out-rebounded Attica 49-25.

Dighton 47, Argonia 35 — Argonia shot 29 percent and fell to Dighton in the quarterfinals despite carrying a one-point lead into the fourth quarter. Haylea Hessman had 15 points but needed 18 shots for Argonia, which finished the season 19-5. Argonia was out-rebounded 44-24
