Small classes: Hillsboro girls fall in quarterfinal

The unbeaten Jefferson North girls basketball team rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Hillsboro 53-50 in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A tournament on Wednesday in Manhattan.

Hillsboro led 41-37 entering the fourth quarter, but after shooting 52.4 percent in the first half, struggled to 36.8 percent in the second half.

Hillsboro (18-5) was led by Addie Lackey’s 26 points and five rebounds, while Danae Bina had 15 poitns and five boards. Jacee Kramer had 22 points for Jefferson North.

Class 1A-I boys

Spearville 69, Caldwell 34 — Devan York scored eight points and got eight rebounds in a losing cause for Caldwell, which finished 17-7. Caldwell went cold from the field, shooting 28 percent and missing all 15 of its three-point tries.

Class 1A-II boys

Chetopa 65, Attica 49 — Daymon Howell scored 17 points and Devon Newberry added 11 points and eight rebounds in a losing cause for Attica, which finished 17-7. Chetopa, led by Brice Riddle’s 20 points, is the third team this season to score 60 points or more against Attica, which was making its first trip to the state boys tournament since 1962.

Wallace County 69, Central Christian 46 — Noah Starkey scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and had three blocks in a losing cause for Central Christian, which finished 16-8.
