Basketball roundup: Maize teams win shares of AV-CTL I crowns

Aaron Shaw scored 18 points and visiting Maize held Newton to 12 first-half points in a 49-38 boys victory on Friday, clinching a tie for teh Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I crown with Derby.

Maize (17-3) and Derby (15-5) finished 9-1 in the division. They split games during the season.

Connor Lungwitz and Jacob Horsch had 10 points each for Maize, while Riley Kingsley had 12 for Newton.

Derby 60, Salina South 49 — The host Panthers raced to an 18-8 first-quarter lead to clinch their share of the division title. Jeremy Dunham had 17 points, Keaton Steadman had 12 and Nyjee Wright and James Conley had 10 each for Derby. Justin Stonebraker led Salina South with 17 points.

Girls

Maize 44, Newton 37 — Daley Handy had 13 points and Keiryn Swenson added 10 as Maize won at Newton to tie for the AV-CTL Division I title with Salina Central. Newton was held to 15 first-half points and got 15 points form Taylor Stahly.

Derby 44, Salina South 37 — Madi Greenwood and Grace Mitchell had 17 points each in the Panthers’ home victory.
