Girls roundup: Garden Plain tops Trinity Academy
Madison Schmelzer had 15 points and Lizzie Costello added 13 as the Garden Plain girls beat Trinity Academy 48-42 on Friday night in a matchup of teams trying to catch unbeaten Cheney in the Central Plains League.
Garden Plain withstood Trinity’s fourth-quarter rally to improve to 11-5 overall, 4-2 in the CPL. Trinity is 10-6, 4-2.
Caroline Zielke had 12 points to lead Trinity.
Northwest 53, East 46 — Calea Carr, who scored half of her 18 points in the fourth quarter, led Northwest in scoring. Cassie Pauls added 15 for Northwest. Kimirra Lee paced East with 13.
North 58, Southeast 39 — The Redskins honored seniors Emeli Bryant, Kayla McFaul, Daya Sargent and Chesney Vaughn with a victory. Aliyah Bernard led North off the bench with 14 points, while Rachael Jenkins matched that total for Southeast.
Andover 46, Goddard 40 — Jaylyn Agnew scored 18 points to spark Andover. Goddard had a chance to tie, down three with 40 seconds remaining, but was called for an offensive foul. The Trojans kept their Division II lead of one game over Eisenhower.
Andale 43, Wellington 27 — Andale’s defense limited host Wellington to 16 points through three periods. Brittany Meyer led Andale with eight points.
Andover Central 64, Valley Center 51 — A 16-2 second quarter helped the visiting Jaguars win and pull into a second-place tie with Eisenhower in Division II. Skyler Snodgrass had 21 points for Central, with Masen Stemp and Brooke Pedersen scoring 11 each. Shelby Bosken had 13 and Megan Barnes 11 for Valley Center.
Arkansas City 45, Maize South 31 — The visiting Bullpups outscored Maize South 15-6 in the fourth quarter to clinch a Division II victory. Kaitlyn Potter had 14 for Ark City, while Jaelynn McLaurian had 11 for Maize South.
Salina Central 63, Derby 44 — Emily Wood had 29 points as the Mustangs stayed unbeaten in Division I and overall.
Eisenhower 57, Newton 50 — Brynn Minor scored 21 points to lead Eisenhower to a non-division victory. Hannah Carlgren had 17 points and Jacque Anderson 12 for Newton.
McPherson 65, El Dorado 15 — The host Bullpups led 34-5 at halftime and 68-11 after three quarters. Janae Barnes had 16 to lead McPherson.
Circle 45, Augusta 42 — Talia Highbarger had 13 points and Alison Kirkham had 10 to lead host Circle, while Casady Marlnee had 13 to lead Augusta.
Maize 61, Campus 29 — Keiryn Swenson’s 18 points helped Maize beat Campus, which was held to 12 first-half points. Brianna Johnson had 15 points and Daley Handy added 11 for Maize.
Rose Hill 57, Mulvane 45 — Kynnedy Myers had 13 points and Autumn Lipscomb 10 for Rose Hill. KaSandra Melick had 18 to lead Mulvane.
Central Plains League
Cheney 53, Independent 37 — The visiting Cardinals improved to 14-2, 6-0 in the CPL behind 14 points from Taylor Needham. Alisa Coccetella had 13 to lead Independent.
Douglass 37, Conway Springs 24 — Cashlyn Munroe had 11 points to lead Douglass to a CPL road victory in a matchup of teams with one league loss. Sara Echelberry led Conway with 11 points.
