Roundup: Beard’s buzzer-beater lifts North by Northwest

Zach Beard hit a 15-foot jumper to beat the buzzer Tuesday night, giving North High’s boys a 60-58 victory over Northwest in a City League basketball game at Northwest.

Beard had a game-high 25 points and hit the game-winning shot after a scramble for a loose ball.

Brett Johnston had a season-high 24 points to lead Northwest, while Kaleb Cobb added 13 points.

Other City League boys

Heights 62, Carroll 28 — Heights’ defense was the key to a 24-5 third quarter and a comfortable home victory. Semaj Hervey led the Falcons with 15 points, while Davon Gill had 11. Brett Bell had 14 points to lead Carroll.

Southeast 69, South 63 — Southeast rallied in the fourth quarter to beat visiting South. EJ Garnes had a season-high 31 points and Jordan Murdock had 17 for Southeast, while Jordan Moore (16 points) and Hunter Rogers (14) led South.

AV-CTL boys

Derby 51, Arkansas City 39 — Jeremy Dunham scored 22 points to lead the host Panthers. Blake Haley led Ark City with 10 points.

El Dorado 52, Augusta 47 — Isaac Johnson had 15 points and Jared Haury 12 in the host Wildcats’ victory.

McPherson 66, Circle 32 — Peter Horton had 18 points, Drew Pyle 17 and Kyler Kinnamon 16 for the host Bullpups in their non-division victory. Cal Hartley led Circle with 11 points.

Hutchinson 59, Goddard 54 — The visiting Salthawks rallied from four points down in the fourth quarter for a non-division victory. Jezel Parra led Hutchinson with 19 points, while Tucker Vang had 15 to lead Goddard.

Maize South 69, Nickerson 43 — Kade Kordonowy had a season-high 32 points to lead the Mavericks at home. Maize South took control of the non-league game with a 28-point second quarter. Brett Barney had 12 for Maize South, while Conner Childs had 11 to lead Nickerson.

Girls tournaments

Trinity Academy 64, Burrton 22 — The Knights built a 40-13 halftime lead and cruised to a Berean Academy tournament victory. Shiloh Miller led Trinity with 17 points.

Garden Plain 53, Defenders 32 — Samantha Hendryx scored 14 points, Madison Schmelzer had 12 and Lauren Costello added 11 as Garden Plain won a first-round game at the Mulvane tournament.

Clearwater 43, Arkansas City 38 — Bryna Vogel had 15 points for Clearwater in a first-round win at the Mulvane tournament. Kaitlyn Potter had 20 points to lead Ark City wit Jordan Salas chipping in 14.
