Connor Lungwitz scored on a quarterback sneak with 5:24 play to give Maize a 17-14 victory over host Dodge City in Class 6A-District 8.
Dodge City had a chance to tie the score with just over 2:20 to go, but the 43-yard attempt fell short. Maize ran out the clock after a Chase White first down to improve to 2-0 in the district and 7-1 overall.
Maize can win the district with a victory over Hutchinson next week and claim its first playoff spot since 2009.
Lungwitz accounted for both Maize touchdowns, connecting with Kendall Stewart on a 7-yard pass with 7:55 to go in the first half. The Eagles led 10-7 at halftime.
Dodge City led 14-10 after scoring on a blocked punt with 18 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Other Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League
Augusta 28, Trinity Academy 24 Augusta quarterback Tristan Finch capped off a big night with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Connor Hurst in the fourth quarter to even the Orioles record at 1-1 in Class 4A-District 11 play. Finch threw for 273 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 68 yards and another touchdown. Hurst finished with 170 receiving yards on 11 catches. Trinitys Matt Jones threw for 104 yards and two interceptions. The loss dropped Trinity to 0-2 in 4A-11.
Collegiate 49, Rose Hill 38 Collegiate overcame 389 passing yards and four touchdowns from Rose Hills Brett Bonar to improve to 2-0 in 4A-District 11. The Spartans had a pair of running backs surpass the 100-yard mark with Jacques Williams (136) and Seth Carder, who ran for 143 yards and four touchdowns.
Liberal 36, Eisenhower 31 Liberal improved to 2-0 in 5A-District 8 headed into next Fridays showdown with Bishop Carroll. Dylan Thompson led Eisenhower, 0-2 in 5A-District 8, with 155 rushing yards.
Mulvane 30, Wellington 14 Mulvanes Michael Mason opened the game with touchdown runs of 41 and 28 yards on his way to 159 rushing yards as the Wildcats evened their record in 4A-District 12 at 1-1.
South 34, Campus 21 South evened its record in 6A-District 7 behind Kyle Wilsons 132 rushing yards and one touchdown. Souths Dominic Webb added 93 passing yards and two touchdowns. John Becker led Campus with 187 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Central Plains League
Conway Springs 55, Chaparral 28 Conway Springs quarterback Dakota Finstad had 221 yards of total offense, threw for two touchdowns and rushed for one more. The Cardinals are now 2-0 in 3A-District 9.
Hutchinson Trinity 28, Garden Plain 7 Hutchinson Trinity led 21-0 before Garden Plain got on the board as the Owls dropped to 1-1 in 3A-District 11.
Independent 58, Remington 23 Karson Rowe rushed for 188 yards and five touchdowns for Independent as the Panthers evened their record at 1-1 in 3A-District 10. Shase Williams added 147 rushing yards and one touchdown for Independent.
