Cheney, Lonker finish day with state golf titles
GARDEN CITY By the time the final group came in at the Class 3-2-1A girls golf tournament at The Golf Club at Southwind in Garden City, the darkness was already threatening.
But there were playoffs to be played, including for the individual title between Cheney senior Brooklyn Lonker and Cimarron senior Jessica Ast, who had both shot an 87.
So off the two went to play, but by the second hole, it was so dark they couldnt see the golf balls.
After a call to Cheryl Gleason of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, it was decided that Lonker and Ast would be co-champs.
Thats a good way to handle that, Cheney coach Randy Leroux said.
Cheney also won the team title, its first.
More than anything, thats been our goal for as long as I could remember, said Lonker, who finished fourth in 2012 and helped the Cardinals finish second as a team. I knew we had a shot this year, and its so great to obtain that goal. I felt like we played very well, and I couldnt ask better from my teammates.
Lerouxs goal for his team was to shoot their average, 400, and thats exactly what they did. Caney Valley was second at 407, while Cimarron was third (416 points), Eureka fourth (417).
Cheney senior Taylor Wheelock finished ninth, an improvement from 2012 when she finished just out of the medals.
I guess Id say I really struggled last year, Wheelock said. I figured I was where I was and the seniors were better than me. This year I am the senior, so I had to be better. I practiced in the summer along with Brooklyn.
Its just really exciting. Taylor Overlees, it was her first year playing. And Brooke Fischer didnt play last year, so its her first year back. Weve had injuries. This is awesome.
Pretty Prairies Nikayla Lampkins was 10th, while Eureka freshman Raegan Boone finished tied for 13th and her teammate, Chandler Birkholz, finished tied for 15th.
When Lonker went out to her playoff hole, Leroux said there was already talk that darkness was going to fall quickly.
The first hole, I could see (the ball) a little bit, Lonker said. But on the second hole, I couldnt see it at all. You couldnt see how the green was or anything like that.
She also lost a ball in the grass on the second playoff hole.
Brooklyn hit a drive and no one could tell her where it went, Leroux said. They knew it went to the right, but not how far right.
Lonker couldnt find the ball, so she had to take a drop and the penalty. She and Ast were still tied after the hole, for which Lonker was grateful.
If I would have lost it like that, I would have been very upset, she said.
But Lonker never lost it emotionally, even in the difficult conditions.
Ive definitely worked on that throughout the year, she said. Throughout the state tournament, Ive focused on, when you hit a bad shot, you focus on the next one.
