Maize grabs runner-up spot in 6A golf
GARDEN CITY When the Maize girls golf team graduated two key seniors Lizzie Hurley and Madison Scheer from its 2012 Class 6A runner-up team, coach Ben Harlow wasnt sure the Eagles could duplicate such a run this season.
We knew it would be a big stretch to be in the top four or five, Harlow said. We lost two seniors that scored well for us at the state tournament.
The upper teams in the state have a good back end, and what I mean by that is, they have a good three and four player. Everyone here has a great player, but whoever has a good three and four player will win.
Maize not only had a strong showing Monday in the Class 6A tournament at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course by senior Taelyn Entriken, who shot a 75 to finish third, but Brittani Casement also shot an 87 as the Eagles took second with a 353.
Washburn Rural won the title with a 339, while Garden City took third with a 355. Olathe Northwests Audrey Judd, who has made an oral commitment to Nebraska, won her second consecutive title, shooting a 71.
I didnt think we had a shot at (top three), but as the season went on, the girls kept improving, and we knew we had a shot, Entriken said.
Harlow specifically schedules meets at state tourney sites, and has increased the difficulty of Maizes schedule.
It paid off.
The girls worked hard throughout the year, Harlow said. Some of the girls improved dramatically. Ashley Reiswigs improvement from last year to this year was huge for us. Brittani Casement had a great day today. But you cant place in the top three in state unless you have a horse.
Youre lucky as can be to have a golfer who shoots 75 on a consistent basis, and Taelyn puts her team in the right spot just about every week. Shes played a huge role. Shes hands-down the greatest golfer weve ever had. Shes one of the best Ive seen in the Wichita area in the last 10 years.
Entriken, who doesnt know where shell play college golf, is still irked with her seventh place finish in 2012.
But she was confident shed play well in her final high school tournament.
I went out there and played good, she said. I hit a lot of good shots. I think I did all that I could do.
Entriken, who played in the final group with Judd, opened her round with a birdie, which actually could have backfired.
Its exciting, but sometimes when you start out with a birdie, you get nervous because youre playing well and its kind of nerve-wracking because you dont want to blow it away, she said.
She birdied Nos. 1 and 6 and was 1-under through eight. She bogeyed No. 9, though, and thats when Judd made her run as she birdied Nos. 9, 10 and 11.
Thats when I gained my confidence, Judd said. I told myself, I got this, just keep pushing through.
Judd stumbled briefly on the last two holes, though. She had figured out where she was in reference to other players, and wanted to finish strong, but she bogeyed the final two holes.
It didnt matter, though, as she won by three strokes.
I got a little nervous, she said. I didnt know where I stood. I wanted to par out. I hit all good shots, just didnt score well.
Wichita Northwest finished seventh as a team, while Derby sophomore Sydney Murray finished tied for 15th and Northwests Lexi Clark was tied for 19th.
