4A tennis: McPherson brings home team title
TOPEKA It became evident on Saturday that McPherson was probably on its way to the Class 4A girls tennis state championship.
But the Bullpups continued to pile up the points on Sunday, capping things with a state doubles championship from juniors Emily Ediger and Camry Holle and winning the team title by a 51-33 margin over Independence. Hayden was third with 26 points, two points in front of Andover Central.
In addition to the doubles title, McPherson got a runnerup singles finish from freshman Ellea Ediger.
Emily Ediger and Holle outlasted the top-seeded Wamego team of junior Lanie Page and senior Kaylee Page in the doubles final, with McPherson taking a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 victory, closing out the match with a 7-0 run in the third-set tiebreaker.
After winning the first set, McPherson lost the second set and was down 4-2 in the third set before rallying and ending the match with a dominating performance in the tiebreaker.
"We were tired of getting down so we needed to change it up and start off strong,'' Emily Ediger said.
The win by Ediger and Holle (27-7) avenged a loss to Page and Page at regionals. Page and Page finished the season 29-1.
McPherson coach Tyler Brown said that the doubles championship was a nice capper to a great weekend.
"To end it with a doubles state championship, that just makes it awesome, and especially how they ended it,'' Brown said.
All of McPherson's top six had a hand in the championship, with junior Katlyn Reifschneider taking sixth in singles and the Bullpup doubles team of seniors Brooke Bate and Taylor Swartzendruber finishing 10th.
"The depth we have this year, it's not just one through six, I feel it's one through 16,'' Brown said. "We had 16 girls out and every one of them are a part of this.''
Independence junior Abbi Groff captured the singles championship with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over McPherson's Ellea Ediger in the final. Groff (32-6) had finished second in the state as a sophomore.
Andover Central senior Megan Wong finished third in singles, taking a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wichita Trinity senior Amber Zimmerman in the third-place match
Buhler's team of sophomore Jessica Steffen and freshman Kendra Nachtigal finished third in doubles, taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Hayden's Michelle Voegeli and Megan Muller in the third-place match.
Andover Central sophomore Claire Calvert and freshman Colby Fugit took fifth place in doubles, taking a 9-3 win over Pratt seniors Lauren McClain and Dani Williams.
