Volleyball notes: Clearwater remains hot heading into sub-state
Clearwater volleyballs win over Rose Hill last Tuesday was the perfect kind of victory to springboard into the postseason. It wasnt Clearwaters first experience with success, though.
The Indians have had plenty of success, including a 17-0 start to the season, and heads into the Oct. 26 Class 4A-Division II sub-state with a 24-4 record and a No. 3 ranking by the coaches association.
Clearwaters regional also has Pratt, Trinity Academy and Andale, who are ranked fourth, fifth and 10th in 4A-II.
Its a tough draw, thats for sure, Clearwater coach Trista Bailey said.
Clearwater is playing extremely well, despite its late losses.
Going into the Andover tournament (on Oct. 5), they knew they would face some tough competition, Bailey said. Up until that point, in matches and practice, we got a little comfortable. We didnt feel we were challenged in that way yet.
Since then, their defense and mental toughness improved. They had moments in those tournaments where teams would go on four, five, six-point runs and we could never step up and make that play. The more they played together and the more challenges they faced, the more resilient they became.
Clearwater has been led by senior hitter Bryna Vogel, who has made an oral commitment to Kansas State. Vogel has 403 kills, 30 blocks, 142 digs and 21 aces. Senior Victoria Worden has 136 kills, while setter Hayley Reibenspies has 605 assists.
Besides Bryna and Victoria, the others are all freshmen and sophomores, Bailey said. They are all new, and they surprise me every day. Every match someone stands out and steps up.
Morrow nears record El Dorado senior Logan Morrow was always a softball player first. And then El Dorado coach Jane Squires saw her athleticism and convinced her parents to encourage Morrow to play volleyball, too.
I looked at her dad the other day and said, Who would have thought? Squires said. He said, Jane, that was the best decision we ever, ever made for Logan.
Morrow, who has 303 kills and has committed to play at Cowley College, is a middle hitter and 45 percent of her attempts are kills. She is 40 kills from passing the El Dorado kill record.
She moves along the net so well, Squires said. our offense is fast, and a lot of that is Logan. Shes fast. She can hit quicks anywhere along the net. It makes it so unpredictable.
Sub-states Sub-state pairings come out on Wednesday, and it will be interesting to see how some are determined.
One of the toughest eight-team Class 5A sub-states is hosted by Kapaun Mount Carmel and will be split into two sub-states of four each. It has Andover, Heights, Kapaun, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South, Valley Center and West. Andover and Kapaun are ranked in the top 10 in 5A.
