Getting to know Derby’s Alan Flores
Flores, a junior forward, has eight goals and five assists. As a sophomore, Flores earned all-state honors from the coaches association, finishing with 18 goals and five assists.
Did you play soccer when you were young?
“I played, but I joined a team when I was in fourth grade. I just played with my friends (before that). Then I met a friend whose dad had a soccer team. I kept playing from there.”
Who did you play soccer with before you got on a team?
“I played in my neighbhood. We used to have a lot of fun. There were 11 or 12 of us, a lot of them were my cousins. They were serious (games). We’d be mad at each other. Sometimes we wouldn’t like each other during a game.”
What do you like about soccer?
“I just love it. I love scoring goals, having fun with friends, going out of town, winning championships.… We’ve got a good team. We talk. We’ve got good defenders, midfield. Our whole team is good.”
Do you play any other sports?
“No. I want to try to box. I want to take lessons, try to go sign up for boxing in Wichita.… My family, we all watch boxing.”
You have said family is important to you. You have two younger brothers and two younger sisters, but you also have a 3-month-old son, Sebastian. How is it being a father?
“I like playing with my little baby, taking care of him. (Monday) night he didn’t want to go asleep. I had to rock him a little bit. He fell asleep in my arms.… My life has changed just a little bit. I’ve got a (girlfriend) and work and school. That’s all I do.”
