Kapaun football: Monty begins first full year at QB
The meeting took place in the spring, not long after the school year was over.
Kapaun Mount Carmels seniors-to-be, independent of their coach or any other school-related entity, wanted to look each other in the eye and talk about the previous falls disaster of a football season.
A record of 3-6 wasnt going to cut it, they all agreed. And if they wanted to change, there needed to be a new set of rules.
We made a plan, told the rest of the team about it and weve helped each other since, said 6-foot-3, 330-pound senior offensive lineman Craig Lantz. We wanted to get it out of the way before summer conditioning started and make it clear we all needed to work together. Nobody can be out there for themselves. We cant have a team split down the middle again, we cant be fighting each other the whole time.
Both Lantz, who started at right tackle last season and moves to left guard, and senior center Huy Ho return up front for the Crusaders to protect sophomore quarterback Brock Monty, who was the man for the Crusaders last season at the end of the year. Monty came off the bench to lead Kapaun to a 39-28 win over West. Monty also started the last two games, a 31-12 win over Arkansas City and a 21-7 loss to Andover Central.
(Lantz) was raw last season, and hes not as raw this year, Kapaun coach Dan Adelhardt said. Craigs been big his whole life, and part of us getting him to succeed was getting him to assert himself, which hes done.
But the key will be how Monty, who just turned 15 over the summer, plays in his first season as a full-time starter.
You hate to get to the point where youre starting a 14-year-old kid in a varsity game, but thats where we ended up last year, Adelhardt said. Brock is a good one ... he does all the things he needs to do. He encourages those around him, he understands the offense so well that we give him a host of stuff to learn, he grasps it quickly, then we move on and start adding more.

Craig Lantz on his team
What Kapaun does well: I know that well be able to move the ball, especially on some run plays we have set up. We can make the difference up front, we have a bond up there.
What Kapaun has to improve: We need to work on communication. Were bad at that right now, but were getting better and we know its a process. Teamwork is important for us, we need to keep that in our minds.
