Wichita South football: Titans have new-look staff
After an 1-8 finish last year, South football coach Kevin Steiner needed to make drastic changes in order for his second season to be more successful.
I think were pretty athletic, and we made quite a few changes with coaching staff that I hope go along well with our athleticism, so we really start to see the football skill development come through with the program, Steiner said.
Steiner brought in former Missouri Southern assistant State University coach Bob Ray at offensive coordinator, former Bethel coach Travis Graber at defensive coordinator, and former college players John Randle, Sean McDonald and Eric Smith as assistants.
These new coaches brought in some fresh energy that I thought the program really needed, Steiner said.
Not only does the team welcome an almost entirely new coaching staff, but out-of-state transfer Dominic Webb at quarterback.
(Webbs) young, but hes very experienced, senior Darius Taylor said. Hes a very good leader, and he knows the game, hes studied the game.
Although Webb will be a junior, Steiner will depend on him to lead the offense along with Taylor and Kyle Wilson at running back.
The defense is focused on basic fundamentals, rather than trying to accomplish heroic tasks. An over-ambitious defense was a weakness for South last year.
With athleticism serving as a strength, mental discipline will be its main challenge.
With the discipline, if one thing goes bad, are we going to let that become two, three, four things, or are we going to be more focused and move forward and let positive things come from it? Steiner said.
The changes will be tested in Souths opening game against West, with Heights and Bishop Carroll following.
Coach: Kevin Steiner, second season, 1-8
League: City League

Last five seasons: 13-34

What South does well: I think that this year were getting more technical. Were actually doing our jobs and were focusing more on the fundamental aspects. I think we are more fundamentally sound on both sides of the ball.
What has to improve: We still have to be mentally tough this year. Were there, but were not where we want to be yet, weve got to get the mental part down.
