Class 1A girls: Norwich advances in Division II

Bailey Poe scored 20 points and Hayley Poljansek added 14 points and 11 rebounds as Norwich defeated Dighton 56-35 in the quarterfinal round of the Class 1A-Division II girls basketball tournament in Hays.

The victory is Norwich’s ninth straight. It shot 47.8 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point range.

Golden Plains 58, Hope 43 — Hailee Spresser scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to spark Golden Plains in a Division II quarterfinal. Hope got 14 points from Alissa Lauxman. Hope managed 15-of-58 shooting from the field (25.9 percent) and was 9 for 35 (25.7) from three-point range.

Division I

Hoxie 81, South Haven 36 — South Haven (16-7), the tournament’s eighth seed, was held to 10 baskets in a 45-point quarterfinal loss to unbeaten Hoxie in Emporia.

Hoxie (23-0) led 21-5 after the first quarter. Gabriel Spresser had 18 points to lead Hoxie, with five teammates also in double figures.

Ashton Barlow had eight points to lead South Haven, while Paige Turek, Baylee Tanner and Launa White had six points each. South Haven committed 32 turnovers and shot 20.8 percent.

St. John 55, Centre 26 — Alexis Witt scored 14 points and had three steals, and Jamie Waters had 10 points, seven rebounds and seven steals to pace St. John.

Centre (17-6) was led in scoring by Shelby Makovec with nine points. Centre committed 36 turnovers.
