Winter story wreaking havoc with sub-state basketball schedules (with updated list)

Published Feb. 25 at 7:09 p.m. | Last updated Feb. 25 at 7:11 p.m.

The e-mails regarding high school basketball sub-states started for Rod Browning, Remington’s athletic director and boys basketball coach, on Saturday.

With no school on Thursday and Friday, certain forms hadn’t been sent or received. Then Monday, with the promise of a snowstorm coming, the e-mails and phone calls between coaches and athletic directors in the Conway Springs sub-state escalated.

The result is Monday’s games being postponed and some schools hosting games that don’t include their teams.

“The (Kansas State High School Activities Association) has to worry about a million sub-states, and we just are worried about ours,” said James O’Brien, Conway Springs athletic director and boys coach. “It’s been tough, but the coaches and ADs have been great.

“Everybody understands we’re trying to get games in this week. We don’t want to play back-to-back games if we don’t have to.”

Remington’s situation is simple. Both boys and girls were higher seeds, so they merely moved Monday’s girls game to 6 p.m. Tuesday, the boys game back a half-hour to 7:30 on Tuesday.

“That was an easy thing right there,” Browning said. “It eliminates the need for two (crews of) officials and it puts them in the same spot.”

But the Garden Plain girls, the top-seeded team in the sub-state, won’t get to host their first-round game against Belle Plaine. Instead, they’ll play Belle Plaine at Sedgwick, which is where Garden Plain boys will be, as well.

Independent will host its boys game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and will be the site for the Douglass-Sedgwick girls at 6.

“I feel bad for those teams that earned the right to host,” O’Brien said. “But people have stepped up to say they’d host …. All are doing their part to make it as smooth as possible.”

There is a chance that the majority of Monday’s and Tuesday’s nearly 300 basketball games would be postponed. If that happens, Fran Martin, KSHSAA assistant executive director, said there would be four quarterfinal games on Wednesday, four on Thursday.

So in Class 3A, where girls were scheduled for Monday, they would play their quarterfinal games on Wednesday, boys on Thursday, semifinals on Friday and championships Saturday.

“We’re trying to work with it as best we can,” Martin said. “The challenge is, particularly Wednesday and Thursday, we have almost every official assigned some place. If we can have more than one game at a site and use the same set of officials for two games, that’s best.”
