Looking at the Class 6A football quarterfinals
Just a quick peek at the 6A football playoffs – will hit the rest of the classes in this same manner over the rest of the week. All games on Friday.
Class 6A quarterfinals
Olathe East (6-4) at Lawrence Free State (9-1) – Here’s the article from the Kansas City Star on Olathe East’s 17-7 win over Shawnee Mission East last Friday. Olathe East is quite a different team from early in the season – Hayden Frazier and Ryan Woodson were their top two rushers against SM East, two players that didn’t even play the first time the two teams met, a 42-21 win by SM East. Free State has had the same coach, Bob Lisher, since the school opened in 1997.
Shawnee Mission West (9-1) at Lawrence (8-2) – It’s only the second time both of Lawrence’s high schools have both moved beyond the first round of the playoffs. Shawnee Mission West won the regular-season matchup against Lawrence, 20-14.
Derby (9-1) at Dodge City (5-5) – Tough road trip for the Panthers for the distance, but Friday’s weather outlook for Dodge City is high of 80 degrees and low of 53 … which is amazing for the second week of November. The worst part about playing that far west this time of year (besides the really good teams) are the conditions and that cold win that just strangles you. Dodge City and Derby share four of the same opponents – Southeast, Heights, Hutchinson and Maize. Derby’s only loss this season was to Hutch, and Dodge City lost to Hutch, Maize and Heights.
Hutchinson (8-2) at Topeka (9-1) – Somehow, this is Topeka’s first time getting past the first round of the playoffs – I only say that in amazement because the school has been around SINCE 1871!!! Here’s a preview story on the game from Lucas Fahrer of the Hutch News.
