Collegiate rumbles into second round
Landon Root threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as Collegiate overcame a brief 3-0 defecit to beat visiting Winfield 35-10 in a Class 4A first-round playoff game on Tuesday night.
Root completed 13 of 18 passes for 276 yards for the Spartans (9-1), who play host to unbeaten Holton in a second-round game Saturday.
Spenser Schooler hauled in touchdown passes of 26 and 71 yards from Root. Collegiate scored 35 unanswered points before Winfield (4-6) added a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Winfield’s Jordan Johnson rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown.
Other Class 4A
Holton 57, Hesston 26 — Host Holton stayed unbeaten by scoring the game’s first 28 points. Holton led 57-6 before Hesston scored 20 fourth-quarter points. Ryan Schadler had 18 carries for 171 yards and two scores for Hesston, but the Swathers’ defense gave up 517 rushing yards.
Andale 58, Hugoton 27 — The host Indians led at halftime 44-0 behind six touchdowns from five players. Hunter Knoblauch scored on a 32-yard run and 46-yard pass reception.
McPherson 34, Clay Center 17 — Austin O’Bannon rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown, and also scored on an 85-yard kickoff run as the host Bullpups advances to a second-round home game against Andale.
Buhler 28, Ulysses 7 — Riley Allen scored two touchdowns and rushed 33 times for 250 yards as the visiting Crusaders won, setting up a second-round home game against Concordia on Saturday. Luke Berblinger ran for a touchdown and threw for another for Buhler (7-3).
Class 3A
Garden Plain 49, Marion 14 — The host Owls scored the first 21 points and cruised into Saturday’s showdown with Conway Springs. Dylan Clark carried 13 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns, while Ethan Balestracci had three short touchdowns.
Sedgwick 70, Chaparral 31 — Logan Thompson rushed for five touchdowns and 236 yards as the host Cardinals ran over Chaparral. Teammate Dalton Brandt rushed for 240 yards and four scores as Sedgwick advances to meet Hillsboro on Saturday. Chaparral’s Zack Duwe rushed for 182 yards and passed for 197.
Hillsboro 34, Haven 13 — Shaq Thiessen, Josh Wiebe and Lucas Sinclair caught touchdown passes that helped the host Trojans shake off a 13-all second quarter tie with Haven. Hillsboro got 201 passing yards and three touchdown tosses from Tyler Proffitt. Hillsboro plays host to Sedgwick in Class 3A’s second round Saturday.
