Perkins, Kapaun bring home regional golf titles
The 11th hole at Braeburn Golf Course isn’t very difficult. Straight as an arrow, it’s all about judging the power on the back swing.
Kapaun’s Hannah Perkins didn’t do a very good job of that on Monday at the 5A regional golf tournament, but somehow it all worked out in her favor.
“If it didn’t hit the hole it was way past,” Perkins said. “That was a lucky shot.”
Her chip shot for par on the 11th paved the way for a back-nine score of 38, good enough to give Perkins the top score in the regional.
“The front nine I kind of struggled,” Perkins said. “I knew my back nine had been a lot better, so I thought maybe I have a chance (to win). I was just trying to play my game.”
Last week, Perkins finished second at the City League tournament, two shots behind teammate Katie Wells.
While Monday was all about Perkins, Kapaun coach Dan Phillips knows having the both of them will give the Crusaders a major edge heading into next week’s state tournament.
“With girls golf, if you have a couple girls that are capable of shooting in the 70s or low 80s, it definitely helps out the team chase,” he said. “We have been relying on those two all year and they have come through all year for us. And the other girls are playing well and are close. We just hope everyone can put it together next Monday.”
Wells finished tied for third with Makena Mucciaccio of Goddard Eisenhower, both having shot an 85. Bishop Carroll’s Carly Hill finished second with an 84.
The tandem of Perkins and Wells was enough for Kapaun to win the team title as well, finishing seven strokes ahead of second-place Bishop Carroll.
“We were actually down three strokes at the turn today, but had four of the girls play a lot better on the back nine and that was the difference today,” Phillips said. “I’m proud of the way the girls battled.”
Goddard Eisenhower also qualified for state as a team.
