Conway Springs football: Cardinals keeping single-wing in step
There will be a time this season when the Conway Springs offense finds itself lined up against a bigger, more experienced opponent.
With only four starters back for the defending Class 3A champions on offense and the biggest of those being 6-foot-5, 240-pound quarterback/running back Tanner Wood this is inevitable.
In facing this challenge, the Cardinals preparation will be crucial followed only by precision.
So much relies on that first step, and just starting with putting your foot right where it needs to be after the snap, said senior offensive lineman Derek Martin, a returning starter. You want to be precise and that comes from practicing it over and over again.
Junior Ethan Roth (6-foot, 250) and sophomore Logan Creek (6-3, 260), should give Conway Springs some much-needed size up front Martin is 5-10, 195 and fellow returning starter Levi Bond is 6-1, 225 but more important to the team will be the newcomers learning the nuances of the single-wing offense to keep opponents off-balance.
Fourth-year coach Matt Biehler and longtime assistant Gregg Hullinger both part of all seven of the Cardinals state titles since 1998 coach the offensive line together.
On paper, we have kids that arent starters, but theyve got a lot of playing time, Biehler said. Theyre unproven, but they know the style we run. We want to be physical running the football.
Ryan Pauly (6-1, 155) is a returning starter at running back and 5-10, 175-pound junior Brady Bodine backed up but got some carries last season.
Everyone showed up for weights and took care of their responsibilities this summer, Biehler said. And training camp gives them the opportunity to show all that hard work paid off.
Wood, Pauly and senior linebacker Carl Leahy (6-1, 205) are the returning starters on defense.
I think everybody was really looking forward to camp this year and the opportunity to get the pads on and compete, Martin said. Were all eager for that contact, to start hitting and showing what kind of team we are.
