Quick look at North football
Kelley Sayahnejad saw 50 percent more North High football players at workouts this summer. That’s one sign of encouragement for a program that’s won 1 of 18 games the past two seasons.
There are other signs, too. RB Leon Williams (408 yards) is back for his senior season, and he’ll be running behind a much more experienced offensive line, led by Jonathan Villanueva, Jose Chavarria and 6-foot-8 LT Daniel Mathiasen.
“We have three starters back on the offensive line, and we’re a year stronger,” Sayahnejad said. “Up front, we’re better suited to run more than we have.”
Josh Bryan and Zach Beard will compete for the QB job, an opening created when junior Danny Jones transferred to West. Bryan started two games last season, while Beard is the basketball team’s point guard and brings some on-court savvy to the field.
North will have to play without one of its top players, MLB Sean Bernard, for the early part of the schedule after he broke his foot playing summer basketball. He hopes to return by midseason.
