Wichita South football
Just got off the phone (cable news term) with Kevin Steiner, the first-year football coach at Wichita South. He’s in a unique situation, having been named coach just two months ago after the resignation of Cory Brock.
Steiner was a South assistant for nine of the past 10 years, so he knows the players. But in the middle of summer workouts, it’s a little late to make sweeping changes. Then again, for a team that made strides by winning four games and averaging almost three TDs a night, maybe change isn’t needed.
“You need to make changes (to suit) your personnel,” Steiner said. “There’s going to be small changes. But the terminology’s the same, so we’re speaking the same language.”
Kaale McCullouch was third in City League passing yards last season, but Steiner said fellow senior David Lowrey will push for playing time at QB. McCullouch has two years of starting experience, Lowrey has a strong arm.
Here’s a look at South’s schedule. Most intriguing is the opener against West and Weston Schartz’s return to the Pioneers. South would seem to have the talent advantage. Fascinating opener.
