State baseball notes

Class 6A

Campus (18-4) — The Colts started 9-0 and have not lost more than one in a row this year. A 2.19 team ERA is paced by JC Baxley (1.58). Oklahoma signee Justin Burba is hitting .453, Baxley .438 and Junior Guerrero .407.

Maize (21-1) — The defending champion is 46-1 over two seasons and has won 17 straight. It’s Rocky Helm’s 12th state trip in 14 years. Ryan Broom is hitting .442, DJ McClure .387 and JC Sturgeon .344. Craig Nicks has a 2.27 ERA in 49 innings, while Lucas Schauer (1.72) and Blake Pontius (3.16) have also done well.

Wichita Heights (14-8) — After losing a 17-inning game to Carroll, Heights won nine straight. Heights has depended on pitching, led by Brandon Mercer (1.52 ERA, 65 Ks and 17 BB in 50 IP) and Jordan Plan (0.75 ERA). Grant Watkins leads the offense, hitting .333 with 19 RBIs, followed by Michael Turner hitting .301 with 11 RBIs.

Class 5A

Carroll (17-5) — Carroll overcame a four-game losing streak late to reach state. Seth Holman serves as Carroll’s ace (1.10 ERA), joined by Jordan Miller (2.14). Carroll outscored opponents 209 to 48. Tanner Palmore is hitting .431, followed by Nolan Barrientos (.404) and Zeke Palmer (.370).

Goddard (19-3) — A 2.26 ERA has carried Goddard’s pitching. Quintin Dougherty (5-0, 1.27) lead the way, though Colin Nevil (6-1, 1.62) and Colton Turner (4-0, 1.17) also excelled. Austin White is hitting .406 and Nevil .403.

Kapaun (15-7) — After getting off to a slow start, Kapaun tied with Northwest and East for first in the City League. A 2.95 ERA and 127 strikeouts were part of Kapaun’s pitchins success. Tate Anderson led with a 1.79 ERA. 3B Max Hagan is hitting .396, CF Tom Meitzner .363.

Class 4A

Mulvane (20-3) Connor Dempsey (5-1, 1.77) has helped Mulvane to a 16-game win streak. Austin Duncan (6-0, 0.81 ERA) and Alex Evans (5-0, 2.15) are unbeaten. Michael Bird is hitting .482, Ty Redington .481.

Nickerson (15-8) — Half of Nickerson’s team is made up of underclassmen, and the two seniors, Quintin Crandall and Justin Engelland, have been leaders. Offensively, Ryan O’Toole and Connor Gomes will be important.

Trinity Academy (20-3) — Seven seniors have helped Trinity to state. David Warnky is hitting .444 and Scott Kempin leads the pitching staff with a 2.33 ERA and a no-hitter. Last year, Trinity lost in the first round.

Class 2-1A

Sedan (21-2) — The defending champion lost its 40-game win streak this season, but Austin Filtingberger (10-0, 1.49) leads the pitching staff. Shon Pinard is hitting .500, Filtingberger .479 and Sam Powell .486.

Medicine Lodge (15-8) — Seniors Zach Larkin and Bryan Hellman lead the pitching staff. Dakota Fischer (1B), Jake Beecher (utility), Brock Traffas (OF), Sheldon Hart (OF) and Drew Ehresman (OF) make up the senior leaders.
