Cessna Stadium takes Carroll’s Meyer higher

Published April 13 at 8:09 p.m. | Last updated April 13 at 8:10 p.m.

When Bishop Carroll junior Nick Meyer competes at Cessna Stadium, count on him being one of the top pole vaulters, regardless of the meet.

He has set personal records in the pole vault at state as a freshman and sophomore and he set a PR at the junior Olympics last summer.

Friday during the Pre-State Challenge at Wichita State was no different. Meyer won the elite event, going 15 feet, 7 inches, a PR by three inches.

“I like the setting,” Meyer said, looking around the stadium.

He also liked the raised runway.

“It’s incredibly fast,” he said. “It’s raised, you have bigger balance, you feel faster and you are faster. You can get on a bigger pole. That pole that I was just on, I didn’t get on it until yesterday… I come here, almost blow through it.”

Meyer has worked to improve.

“Mostly, getting bigger, getting stronger, getting faster, hitting the weights, working on form constantly,” he said. “Every day in practice, the basics over and over and over again. And slowly it adds on your jumps.”

Meyer tried for 16-1, which would have been a Carroll record. He didn’t get it, but he was thrilled with the 15-7. When he cleared it, he looked up and watched as the bar stayed in place.

“Falling down and you know it’s staying up there and you don’t have to worry, knowing you completed a successful jump,” he said. “Each one is just like Christmas, almost.”

Rose Hill’s Tyler Knight finished second at 14-5 1/4.

Pressure win – When Conway Springs senior Emily Doffing readied for the 100 meter hurdles, she was nervous. She was the top seed in the second heat. She was supposed to win.

And she was at Wichita State, the same school she’d committed to run at next year.

“Here I am running at my home school for next year,” she said. “If I don’t do good, maybe I won’t be running here next year.”

Doffing then laughed.

She had picked up hurdles in middle school as a way to avoid workouts, and never stopped. By the second or third hurdle in a race, she knows whether she’s going to win.

That was no different in the elite race, which she won in 15.38. She finished second in the 300 hurdles in 47.7.

Conway Springs senior Brian Doffing – a part of the Cardinals’ 3A title football team – is also a top hurdler.

“It was funny last year, people are saying, ‘look at the twins who both lead hurdles,’ ” Emily Doffing said with a laugh. “We’re not twins. He’s my cousin.”

Taking steps – Maize senior Janelle Wilgers has only done the pole vault since her sophomore season. It’s a short time for such a technical sport, but the gymnast has signed with Central Missouri State for the pole vault.

And she’s already shown improvement.

She finished second in Class 6A a year ago and won the elite division Friday, going 10-6, beating Andale’s Grace Shiach on jumps.

“It’s really nice weather,” Wilgers said. “We don’t always have these nice weather meets, so you need to take advantage. Most meets are pretty chilly, so it’s nice having your muscles warmed up and you run faster and you get into the pit a lot farther.”

She wanted to hit 11 feet, which would have tied a PR.

“I really want to jump higher,” she said. “If I could jump 12, that would be amazing this year.”

Her coach, Roger Pierce, is confident she’ll get higher.

“We just need to relax,” he said. “She’s working on her take off. She’s got big jumps in her.… She’s going to jump high; I just don’t think it’s coming as soon as she’d like.”

Looking for more – Newton’s La’tiyera Yeargin finished third in the 100 meters at the Class 5A meet last May as a freshman.

“That’s really pushed me,” she said. “I want to be better than last year. I’ve used it as my motivation.”

She won the elite 100 meters in 12.33. It’s her best time of the season, despite a quadriceps injury suffered earlier.

•  Bishop Carroll swept the 800 elite races. David Thor won the boys side in 1:55.8, while Katherine Dillard won the girls in 2:18.71.

•  Douglass’ Avery McNelly won the elite 400 meters in 49.93, while Colton Mays from Rose Hill was second in 50.04. Collegiate’s Rhys Powell ran a 50.0 in the 6-5-4A division.

•  Goddard’s Nick Betts won the elite triple jump at 44-11 3/4, while Cheney’s Hunter Veith was second (44-4 3/4), Conway Springs’ Joseph Gerber third (44-1 1/2).
