Campus gets softball split with Derby
DERBY Campus’ Audrey Zogelmann doesn’t think about much when attempting a steal. Either she’s safe. Or she’s not.
Her initial focus, though, that’s crucial.
“I always am thinking about whenever (the pitcher) releases,” Zogelmann said. “Especially getting the first step off first or second or third, wherever you are stealing from. Always getting that push off the bag is critical.”
Zogelmann had five steals in a doubleheader against Derby at High Park on Tuesday night, including an essential steal in the top of the 10th inning that helped Campus earn a 3-2 win. Derby won the first game 7-1.
Zogelmann had led off the 10th with a single to right then promptly stole second on an 0-1 pitch to teammate Macy Schultz.
“She’s pretty much got a green light,” Campus coach Jeff Long said of Zogelmann. “She hurt her knee in basketball season, but she’s a natural on the bases. When the ball is hit, she knows what is going on, and she has a lot of confidence on the bases.”
When Schultz bunted down the third-base line, Zogelmann advanced to third easily and then scored when the next batter, Katlyn Bond, hit a deep fly to center field.
“That’s what we needed,” Zogelmann said of the hit.
Derby’s offense was potent in the opening game. The Panthers (4-2) had 11 hits and scored five runs in the fourth to give Campus pitcher Kyndel Shelburn her first loss despite seven strikeouts.
Derby’s Carly Gum had led off the fourth with a triple and then Derby got RBIs from Kennedy Long, Montanna Whiteman and Britney Wimberly. Pitcher Hayley Hume got the win and had eight strikeouts.
In the second gameDerby watched as Campus built a 2-0 lead in the first two innings before the Panthers tied the score in the third on an RBI single by Whiteman. When Shelburn replaced starting pitcher Shayla Bush in the sixth, Derby popped out foul to end the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
“We put our hits together in the first game,” Derby coach Christy Weve said. “We didn’t do that in the second game. I think everyone was trying to kill it.”
But Derby’s defense kept the game in check. Tori Miller played especially well at shortstop, and left fielder Jessica Egan made a diving catch in the ninth – with the bases loaded – and doubled up the runner at third to end the inning.
“This was one of our best defensive nights this season ,” Weve said. “… Everything you could ask for, we did. And Hayley, she throws 17 innings. We’ve got to produce for her. She deserved to win that game.”
