Reserves help Andale boys roll past Clearwater

Clearwater and Andale had trouble scoring early in Tuesday night’s boys basketball game at Andale. The first quarter ended with Clearwater ahead 6-5, and the teams had scored just 21 points combined with two minutes to go before halftime.

But Andale junior Daniel Carney took care of that.

He scored eight points in the final 1:08, including two three-pointers, and Andale took an eight-point halftime lead on the way to a 55-32 victory.

“We’ve known all along he’s a very good shooter,” Andale coach Jeff Buchanan said. “It’s just a matter of him being confident enough and making it a first option instead of look for this guy, look for that guy, because he’s a very unselfish player.”

Carney remained hot in the second half, finishing with five three-pointers and 17 points. His teammates found the range as well in the second half of the AV-CTL Division IV victory.

“It’s a confidence thing. He gave us a small spark to get us going,” Buchanan said. “It shows the tenacity of the young men that kept going.”

Carney, a 6-foot-3 junior, said everything just felt right for him against Clearwater.

“I was open, and I was making some shots,” he said. “I was just open every single time.”

Carney led an Andale bench that contributed 37 of the 55 points.

He began his scoring late in the second quarter with a three-pointer from the left side. He closed the first half with a three from the right side just before the halftime buzzer. It was almost as if he was taking part in a three-point shooting contest, as his last three, with 3:10 to play in the game, was from the top of the key.

Clearwater was missing sophomore guard Johnny Becker, who was on crutches because of an ankle injury. Becker had led Clearwater in scoring last Tuesday with 22 points in a 60-44 loss at Collegiate.

“We were missing a pretty big part of our team tonight,” Clearwater coach Dustin Clevenger said. “Their bench was very productive for them.”
