Boys roundup: Ellis scores 25 as Heights handles South

Heights’ boys won their 61st consecutive game Friday, hitting visiting South with an early knockout punch 85-65, clinching the outright City League basketball championship for a fourth straight season.

Perry Ellis scored nine first-quarter points, helping the Falcons (17-0, 13-0) to a 23-10 lead. He ended up with 25. Twelve Falcons scored, and coach Joe Auer twice subbed a fresh five for his starters.

South’s Diallo Wesley scored 26 points, including two of the Titans’ seven three-pointers. South is 3-15, 0-14 City League.

Other City League

West 70, Southeast 66, OT — The Pioneers rallied to win in overtime, improving to 5-13, 2-12. Southeast dropped to 9-8, 6-7.

Derby 69, Hutchinson 54 — Kyler Steadman scored 24 points to lead host Derby to the Division I championship, pulling ahead of second-place Hutchinson by three games with two to play. Josiah Ray added 14 for Derby (15-4, 11-0).

Collegiate 55, Andale 42 — Riley Kemmer scored 18 points to spark Collegiate. Harrison Morris added

Mulvane 76, Augusta 70 — Nolan Smith had 27 points and Ty Redington 17 as Mulvane evened its record at 9-9. Augusta (9-9, 4-4) was led by Sean Brandenburg’s 35 points.

Wellington 41, Circle 34 — Levi Gurley scored Wellington’s first 14 points, finishing with 18.

Maize South 48, Clearwater 38 — A big fourth quarter helped the host Mavericks, as did 15 points by Micah Kiser.

Rose Hill 49, El Dorado 47 — The host Rockets picked up a key rebound off an El Dorado miss with less than 10 seconds to play, sealing the Division III victory. Luke Willson had 15 points for Rose Hill while Alex Brown and Travis House had 13 each for El Dorado.

Maize 43, Campus 36 — Nine players scored for Maize, led by Jacob Sartain’s 11 points..

Goddard Eisenhower 76, McPherson 60 — Trevon Evans and Zach Bush had 24 points each as host Eisenhower (14-4, 8-3) clinched second place in Division II. The Bullpups (13-5, 6-4) were led by Jordan Hart’s 30 points, but McPherson trailed 40-21 at half.

Newton 55, Salina Central 53 — The host Mustangs fell into third place in Division I.

Arkansas City 51, Valley Center 39 — David Boxman scored 18 points and Justin Spencer had 16 for host Ark City (7-11, 3-7). Zachery Brown had 14 points and Jacob Brittain 10 for Valley Center (3-15, 2-8).

Central Plains League

Cheney 40, Conway Springs 39 — Gabe Schomacker scored 14 points and Gage Scheer had 13 as Cheney handed host Conway Springs its first Central Plains League loss. The Cardinals (11-7, 6-2 CPL) survived two Conway Springs in the final seconds that would’ve won the game. Conway Springs is 14-5, 7-1 and tied with Independent for the league lead with one game to play.

Garden Plain 46, Chaparral 43 — Lucas Jennings and Paul Renyer had 10 points each for the visiting Owls (8-11, 3-5). Scott McCartney had 25 points to lead Chaparral (3-16, 1-7).

Independent 57, Bluestem 51 — The visiting Panthers won at Leon to pull into a first-place tie with Conway Springs with one game to play.

Trinity Academy 55, Belle Plaine 47 — Wilson Alexander had 19 points and Ryan Miller 16 as the host Knights beat Belle Plaine. Storm Scott had 17 to lead the Dragons.
