MULVANE — The way Wellington coach Kevin Hackerott had it figured heading into Thursday’s semifinals of the Mulvane tournament, his girls basketball team was undersized and nowhere near as quick as their opponent, Southeast.

“They’re (Class) 6A, we’re 4A,” Hackerott said. “It’s a big difference. It was ‘who will play to their strengths,’ and our kids did.”

Wellington relied early on its primary strength, three-point shooting, as it hit 5 of 10 threes in the opening quarter en route to a dominating 58-30 victory over Southeast.

Wellington (10-2) will play Garden Plain (12-1), a 52-45 winner over Mulvane, for the tournament title at 6:15 Saturday night.

“We shoot all the time, that’s our weapon,” Hackerott said. “We’re not very big, we play fast and we try to get shots up. That’s our style. We’ve had games of 10, 11, 12 (three-point) makes a game. We’ve got kids who can do that.”

Wellington senior Dani Anderson hit 3 of 4 threes in the first quarter.

“That’s what we practice all the time and that’s what we’re good at,” Anderson said.
