Thursday's tournament roundup: Maize beats Northwest in first round
Keiryn Swenson scored 16 points and Paige Stewart scored 15 as Maizes girls defeated Northwest 60-31 in the first round of the Glaciers Edge tournament in Emporia on Thursday.
Swenson scored 11 of her points in the first half when Maize zipped to a 34-20 halftime lead. Longwitz hit 7 of 8 free throws as Maize made 21 of 32 free throws.
Berean Academy
Berean Academy 49, Trinity Academy 22 Mallory Zuercher scored 14 points and host Berean cruised into Saturdays final. Berean will face Hutchinson Central Christian, a 50-39 winner over Word of Life.
El Dorado
East 37, Valley Center 27 Relina Johnson scored 17 points as the Blue Aces made a big second-half rally to overtake Valley Center. With 10 first-half points, East outscored Valley Center 27-10 in the second half. Madison Wedekind scored 10 for the Hornets.
Mill Valley 77, West 25 Aujanae McCoy had 13 points to lead West, which trailed 31-7 after the first quarter.
Collegiate 55, El Dorado 47 Keli Dunn had 16 points for Collegiate, while teammates Eledria Franklin and Jerica Skar had 11 each. Hannah Helferich had 19 to lead El Dorado.
Haven
Ulysses 43, Cheney 24 Payton Scheer had nine points to lead Cheney, which fell into the losers bracket.
Conway Springs 41, Halstead 19 Britney May had 10 points to lead Conway Springs. Only three players scored for Halstead.
Lawrence Free State
Carroll 55, Junction City 30 Jana Richenberger scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the second half to help Carroll. Kayle Demel scored all 10 of her points in the first quarter as the Eagles raced to a 16-2 lead en route to their fifth straight victory.
All 12 of the Carroll players scored, hitting a season-best 81 percent at the free-throw line (17 of 21).
Pratt
North 79, Chaparral 32 Jayden Dennis and Naomi Rosales each scored 16 points as the Redskins advanced. Amanda Edwards added 14 points and Maddie Northcutt had 13.
Topeka West
Heights 68, Topeka 32 Katie Palmer scored 16 points and Joyea Marshall had 12 as Heights breezed past Topeka. The Falcons face Shawnee Mission East tonight.
Blue Valley 52, Derby 34 Derby trailed 27-15 at halftime. Alyxis Bowens had nine points to lead the Panthers.
