Kapaun comeback sinks Miege
NEWTON Marvin Estes’ adjustments worked and Kapaun Mount Carmel’s girls pulled off a big comeback Thursday night.
Trailing by eight points at halftime, the Crusaders rallied in the third quarter and beat Bishop Miege 60-53 in the first round of the Railer Classic.
“We just had to correct some things on defense and control the boards,” Estes said. “We controlled the boards better in the second half.”
Kapaun outscored Miege 10-2 in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the third quarter to tie the game.
“I’m proud of every one of those kids, it’s a team effort,” Estes said. “They played hard, they played together.”
Kapaun took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter with a three-point basket by Arisa Shaw and maintained that lead for the remainder of the game.
It was the first game back for Kapaun sophomore Sydney Kuhn, who had been out with an achilles injury. Kuhn scored seven points in the third quarter to help Kapaun gain its lead and finished with 13 points.
“I was just ready to play again,” Kuhn said.
Kuhn was not the only big contributor. Freshman Sam Bachrodt scored 17 points and Katie Andersen added 16.
“It’s everyone’s contributions because I couldn’t have gotten any of those baskets without everyone else,” said Bachrodt, who scored 10 points in the first half and was the only Kapaun player who scored in a four-point second quarter.
Kapaun was 14 for 14 on free throws, all in the second half.
“We couldn’t get the kids to understand what we wanted,” Estes said of the slow first half. “Finally they did and we started penetrating and getting layups and getting feedback from the post, and that was the thing that triggered our offense.”
Alexis Hughes of Miege scored 25 points and Sydney Vaughn added 14. Kapaun will face Newton in tonight’s semifinals.
