Lawrence junior Shane Willoughby hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, his only field goal of the game, to cap a comeback and lead Lawrence past Wichita Northwest 57-56 in the first round of the Topeka Invitational on Thursday night.

The Lions (5-4) trailed by 24-12 in the second quarter and were down 51-44 with less than three minutes to play before charging back.

Lawrence tied the game with 14 seconds remaining on a three-pointer by senior Logan Henrichs, but Northwest (7-2) got a dunk from senior Spenser Gales with three seconds left to put the Grizzlies up 56-54.

Lawrence called a timeout with 2.5 seconds left and got the ball to Willoughby, who got off a contested shot as time ran out. Northwest argued that Willoughby was not behind the three-point line, but after a brief conference the officials ruled the shot worth three.

Senior Kendrick Miller scored 16 points for Wichita Northwest while senior Craig Nicholson added 12 points.
