Southeast's boys made less than a third of their shots Saturday and still came out with a win, beating Derby 59-56 at Koch Arena for the Panthers' first loss.

"We played a very good team," Southeast coach Carl Taylor said. "They don't make very many mistakes, they execute very well and they can shoot the ball."

Taylor credited his team's decision to play together.

"If we're going to win, it has to be a team effort," he said. "It can't be one or two individuals."

At halftime, though, Taylor ordered his team to quit playing selfishly.

"We were selfish in the first half, but we came together (in the second half) and we did what we needed to do," said Southeast's Kevin Gunter, who had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Donshea Henderson had 14 rebounds for Southeast, nine in the second half, and D'Avonte. Garland had 18 points.

Southeast took a 56-53 lead on a Gunter putback with 1:56 to go. But Derby's Steadman (21 points) answered, making a three with a hand in his face to tie the score.

Garland missed a driving layup, but Henderson got the rebound and, after a Derby foul, Gunter drove the baseline and dunked for a two-point lead.

"Well, I'm glad he did it, it's about time," Taylor said. "That boy has skills."

Gunter smiled when the dunk was mentioned.

"That was good," he said. "I did it for my team. It gets them hyped."

Derby still had more than 35 seconds, but Steadman and James Conley missed two three-point attempts.

"It's open man, open shots," Derby coach Brett Flory said. "Those kids are guys we feel pretty good about. I wasn't necessarily opposed to either of those shots. In the heat of the moment, kids have to make the best decisions that they can. I don't think those are bad decisions. In hindsight, you can say, we should have gone inside."

Josiah Ray had 15 points and 17 rebounds, but it was a disappointing loss for Derby (6-1).

"We have to get better with our execution," Flory said. "We were trying to cause some things, and we had a really difficult time running them."
