Heights' defense stifles Northwest girls

Fifteen first-half turnovers would destroy most team's chances of winning a game.

Not the Heights girls.

The Falcons defeated Northwest 73-25 at Koch Arena on Saturday night, forcing 24 first-half turnovers, to overcome their own mistakes.

"You know, we get up eight, 10 points on teams sometimes, and they start to relax," Heights coach Kip Pulliam said. "It's too early in the year to do things like that."

The Falcons (6-0, 5-0 CL) struggled offensively in the opening half. Pulliam raised his hands in the air after another missed shot inside and said, 'Come on, guys, we're not this bad!"

Heights' offense might not have been perfect, but there were bright spots. In the first half, Katie Palmer had 14 points and Jada Lynch hit 3 of 5 three-pointers. Palmer finished with 19 points, Lynch 14 and Taylor Chandler 12.

Northwest committed five first-quarter turnovers in a row. The Falcons raced to a 19-3 lead.

"You get that first run and give up that many points, it's tough to get back on it," Northwest coach Jim Mernagh said. "They're awfully good. They shoot the heck out of the ball. They're tough to guard.... And you've got to take care of the ball. If you don't take care of the ball, you're in trouble."
