The North boys basketball team got off to a sluggish start Tuesday night, trailing Southeast after one quarter 16-12.

But junior guard Conner Frankamp helped the Redskins (3-3, 3-3) turn up the heat in the second period, scoring 13 of his 42 points and pacing a 68-60 City League victory Tuesday night at North High.

It wasn't the best of beginnings for the Redskins, as Southeast (2-3, 2-3) slapped on a full-court press on North's first possession and forced a 10-second turnover. Senior D'Avonte Garland hit three three-pointers for the Buffaloes, finishing with 11 points in the opening quarter.

But in the second period, Frankamp hit four field goals and was 4 of 4 from the line, sparking a 21-8 North run, forging a 33-24 halftime lead on a spinning layup in the lane past a couple of defenders.

"We were standing around on offense against their three-quarter-court press," North coach Gary Squires said, "Guys weren't getting to the open spots and we just stood around. We started attacking the basket and took him (Frankamp) out from the top, and he just goes to work."

From there, the two teams played evenly, although Frankamp found a variety of ways to score. He finished with six three-pointers and was perfect in 10 free-throw attempts.

He said he could tell warming up that his shot was falling.

"I came out pretty hot," he said. "I just try to score when I'm open, take my shots when I can."

When Frankamp wasn't scoring, he set up teammates for points. His assist on Zach Beard's layup with 6:29 to play gave the Redskins their largest lead, 62-44.

On another Southeast possession, North's Torrance Henderson stole the ball from a Buffalo, knocking the ball into North's front court. As it was about to roll over the far baseline, Frankamp saved it, and seconds later he took a pass and hit a three-pointer from the left baseline.

"Great hustle by Torrance to get that ball and kick it back out to me to make the play," Frankamp said.

North sophomore guard Tarius Williams suffered an apparent ankle injury after hitting the floor hard with 2:43 left in the first quarter and had to be helped from the court. He did not return.
