Blue Aces' bombs put away Carroll

Making 9 of 10 three-pointers in the first half Friday, East High's boys rolled to a 58-47 City League basketball win at Bishop Carroll.

Senior guards Jalen Love and Kimron Burris combined for eight of the nine from behind the arc. Carroll (1-4, 1-4 CL) also had trouble maintaining any kind of offense, turning the ball over 14 times before halftime.

"You need to get out that way against a scrappy team like Bishop Carroll at their place," East coach Ron Allen said. "That allowed us to do some things defensively."

Starting with a Burris three-pointer in the opening minute, the Blue Aces never trailed. After a Love three-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer put East (5-0, 4-0) up 11-8, Carroll couldn't catch up.

"We had good energy out there," Burris said of the first half. " We were just passing it around, taking open shots. We just had a good game all the way around."

The win — which sends East into the Christmas break undefeated — was completed in the second half by doing the other thing it does well, get the ball inside. East never hit a three-pointer after the break, but they didn't need to as Nathan Jackson warmed up to score 11 of his 15 points. It was a team high he shared with Love, who scored all his points before halftime.

It was an overall strong momentum builder for East heading into break, but it was also a game that showed things Allen thinks his team needs to work on.

"We played decent overall," Allen said. "But I know we still got work to do. This team is hitting in spurts and we're not sustaining them long enough for me. We're going to work on that."

Carroll was led by Jordan Bieberle's game-high 24 points.
