Kapaun girls follow Andersen past Carroll

Katie Andersen spends most of her time limping around, her sore left ankle encased in a walking boot.

The only time it comes off for long stretches — per doctor's orders — is when she sleeps, and when the Kapaun Mount Carmel senior guard is on a basketball court.

Like Tuesday, for example, when she scored 15 points in the Crusaders' 48-43 win over visiting Bishop Carroll.

"My ankle is pretty sore after games... like right now it's throbbing pretty good," Andersen said. "But I guess it's just one of those things you have to deal with."

Trailing almost the entire first half, Andersen's basket with less than one minute to play capped a 10-2 Kapaun run and gave the Crusaders a 20-19 halftime lead.

In a see-saw third quarter, Kapaun couldn't put away the Eagles and six-foot senior center Jana Reichenberger, who led all scorers with 17 points. The Eagles rallied to a 30-30 tie before Andersen nailed a three with 10 seconds left in the quarter for a 33-30 lead.

"I thought we got a little desperate offensively and were taking some bad shots," Kapaun coach Marvin Estes said. "But then we started to get on the floor and fight for the ball, started focusing on defense and everything came off of that.

"That part's not good coaching, that's them going out and making plays."

Carroll took the lead back, briefly, on an early basket by Reichenberger to make the score 34-33, but Kapaun answered with an 8-0 run finished off by a steal and a basket by Andersen for a 41-34 lead that the Crusaders never relinquished.

"I thought we were in a good position at the end of the third quarter," Andersen said. "We were playing good defense and everything flowed from that."

Grace Hagan added nine points for Kapaun, which goes into the break with a 4-1 record.

Jordyn Miller scored 13 points for Carroll.

"They started beating us up the floor late," Miller said. "We weren't making it back on defense and they took advantage."
