Southeast's Smith leads way in win
Southeast senior Reggie Smith wanted to make a statement, having missed most of the Buffaloes' season opening loss Friday at Northwest, and he emerged from coach Carl Taylor's doghouse in a big way on Tuesday night.
Smith scored nine of his 19 points in the second quarter and hit three of four free throws in the final period in a 57-52 City League triumph over Bishop Carroll at Southeast.
Smith said he just had to get acclimated.
"I decided to come out and play my game," he said.
Taylor said defense was a necessity for the Buffaloes to emerge victorious.
"We had to because they have good shooters," he said. "They shoot the ball and they move on offense. I'm proud of the kids, they played the heck out of defense as a team — and that's what it's going to take for us to win."
Senior guard D'Avonte Garland led Southeast (1-1, 1-1) with 21 points, 10 of which came in the first quarter, when the Buffaloes jumped to a 16-13 lead. Despite the duo's scoring, Carroll (1-1, 1-1) wouldn't go away, staying close at halftime, 33-28.
"The first game, Reggie was in the doghouse and (Garland) didn't do nothing that first game," Taylor said. "This is the big difference right here. Plus, they played defense. We've got to continue to keep up the defense as a team."
But every time the Eagles' sharpshooters tried to get open, Southeast managed to put a defender in their way. Jordan Bieberle, who had 18 points Friday in the season-opening victory at South, managed just 14 points against Southeast.
Thomas Sauber who had 10 on Friday, could get just six. Sophomore guard Tyler Palmore took up some of the scoring load, hitting a three-pointer and going six-of-six from the free-throw line for 13 points.Carroll coach Lonnie Lollar said the game was very physical.
"We know we had our chances," Lollar said. "We know we had some missed layups, some missed free throws.
"We were pretty good in the fourth quarter against South, and it deserted us tonight."
