HALSTEAD — For Haven's Kevin Borntrager, Saturday night's 48-41 victory over Rose Hill was an opportunity for his team to drag itself out of hole it took three quarters to dig.

"Coach was wanting to see if we would crash under pressure," Borntrager said. "We came back and never gave up. We really gave it to them."

Down by three points, Haven soared in the final quarter against Rose Hill in the championship game of the Adolph Rupp tournament.

Haven's defense forced five turnovers in the fourth quarter and its offense made its final nine free throws to keep the win out of reach for Rose Hill.

"We were able to get turnovers and convert them into baskets," Haven coach Lonnie Paramore said.

Tied 12-12 after one quarter, Rose Hill's defense helped build a nine-point lead by holding Haven scoreless in the first four minutes of the second quarter.

The cushion didn't last long. Haven came back in the final 1:30 with a 6-0 run to cut Rose Hill's lead to 23-20 at halftime.

Both teams struggled to score in the third quarter. Borntrager hit a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to close Rose Hill's lead to 33-30.

Two free throws and two minutes into the fourth quarter, Haven tied it up at 33-33.

Haven's defense took over from there, causing Rose Hill to make multiple turnovers over the next three minutes.

"There was a long period of time where we just didn't score," Rose Hill coach Rocky Stone said. "(Haven) had a lot to do with that. Their zone defense forced a lot of turnovers They ran it to perfection."

Haven built a small lead with shots from Ridge Foster and Borntrager, who finished with a team-high 13 points each.

Down by four points with less than two minutes, Rose Hill was forced to foul.

Haven didn't miss a free throw in the fourth quarter, shooting 13 of 15 from the line for the game.

"That was big time icing at the end of the game," Paramore said. "Those free throws opened up that lead and made it a little more comfortable."

Sam Newton finished with a game-high 14 points for Rose Hill.
