Heights' offense blazes past East

Football teams attempting to devise a game plan against Heights must feel as if they are attempting the impossible.

Recognizing formations and tendencies is one thing; being able to simulate the Falcons' overwhelming speed is another.

Scoring early and often, Heights overwhelmed East 72-21 Thursday night at Carpenter Stadium.

The Falcons rushed for 601 yards and scored on their first nine possessions.

"In all phases, I thought our kids played well," Heights coach Rick Wheeler said. "I thought our line blocked well. I thought our backs blocked well. I think we have a chance to be pretty good offensively week in and week out if we tighten up some things. But tonight we took advantage of what they gave us."

Hole after hole opened for Heights in the first half. The Falcons averaged 15 yards per rush and the league's top rusher, Dreamius Smith, ran for all of his 274 yards in the first half.

Smith had touchdown runs of 16, 71, 76, 36 and 67 yards and also had a 68-yard run called back by a holding penalty.

"If I was trying to stop us, I would blitz every time," Smith said. "They didn't, so we got off our blocks tonight and gave 100 percent."

When Smith wasn't getting runs up the middle, quarterback Matt Reed was running the option to perfection, constantly keeping the East defense guessing.

Reed ran for 84 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

"Besides wanting to win the game, we want to do everything right, so we can prepare ourselves for teams down the road," Reed said.

Despite allowing touchdown runs of 60 and 40 yards by East's Desmond McGee, the Heights defense made life miserable for the Aces' junior quarterback.

McGee was sacked seven times, threw two interceptions and also gave away a fumble.

"Tonight was really good for our defense because they haven't been tested very frequently," Wheeler said. "East spread us out and ran the ball a little bit and made us make plays."
