Another title for tennis Kapaun
Kapaun Mount Carmel tennis coach Kathy Schulte has been down this road before.
In her three-year tenure her team has never lost a City League title. Saturday's tournament at Wichita State's Coleman Tennis Complex was no different.
The Crusaders picked up their sixth consecutive league title in commanding fashion, taking first place in No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles.
"It was a positive day. I thought they performed well," Schulte said. "I couldn't ask for more."
Abby Stevens, Kapaun's top singles player, took home first place with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Northwest's Lindy Wilkerson in the final.
" (Stevens) has been outstanding," Schulte said. "Lindy makes you really hit some winners. I don't know if the score reflects that but she pushed Abby a bit today."
Stevens' victory helped Kapaun finish with 70 points, 11 better than second-place Bishop Carroll.
"It's fabulous having a team member like that," Schulte said. "Sometimes I feel like I don't even have to worry about her. She knows what I'm going to say and she already has it figured out."
Kapaun's No. 1 doubles partners, Maddie and Allie Schulte, had to work a little harder for their first-place finish.
After winning the first set in the championship match against Carroll's Courtney Lubbers and Maddie Oxler 6-1, the second set when to a tiebreaker.
Kapaun took a 5-2 lead, but Bishop Carroll bounced back to tie it 5-5. Kapaun managed to hold off Carroll and win the tiebreaker 9-7 and the set 7-6.
"It made me chew on the fingernails a little bit," Kathy Schulte said. "I was thinking if this goes into the third set we might be up a creek. It's hard mentally when you're up to lose that lead. That big switch in momentum is just a killer."
"For my equilibrium I wished we would gave sailed through that final set, but honestly it was probably better for them to be put in that position."
Bishop Carroll's Lexie Dorn took home first place in No. 2 singles, beating Kapaun's Courtney McKenzie 6-4, 6-0 in the final.
Rachael Baldwin and Madeline Engel, Kapaun's No. 2 doubles team, beat Carroll's Anne Feldkamp and Paige Lauer 6-4, 6-3 in the final.
With regionals a week away, Schulte said the league title will help boost the team's morale going into the postseason.
"It gives them confidence, but I don't want them to take it for granted," she said. "Having been there and done that does help, but we'll be working our tails off."
