The Eagle's 2010 All-Metro softball team

This is the sixth year for All-Metro teams selected by The Eagle, recognizing the best high school athletes in team sports throughout Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties.

The selection process

In May, Eagle high school beat writers Joanna Chadwick and Chris Elliott sent nomination ballots to all softball coaches at the 38 high schools in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties.

Coaches were asked to return the ballots with nominations of the best players within those counties that they saw this season, including their own players.

The team was selected by Chadwick after tabulating nominations, evaluation of players and additional input from coaches and other media members.

All-league teams

Along with the All-Metro team, The Eagle will publish all-league teams for the counties' major leagues: the City League, Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League, Central Plains League and Mid-Central Activities Association.

Kelsey Berlin

Northwest

Junior first baseman

Berlin's batting average hovered around .500, and she had 34 RBIs and five home runs as she led Northwest into the Class 6A tournament and a 21-2 record. Berlin also pitched and was 9-1 with a 0.53 ERA and had eight shutouts.

Heather Borg

Andover Central

Senior pitcher

Borg, who led Andover Central to a 17-5 record, also played third base and had a .985 fielding percentage. She hit .493 with 40 RBIs and had a .551 on-base percentage. Borg had a 0.92 ERA, 132 strikeouts, a perfect game, a no-hitter and four shutouts.

Shelby Davis

Goddard

Junior outfielder

Davis, a two-time All-Metro selection who missed the last part of the season with a hand injury, used her speed to be a threat on the bases and defensively in the outfield. She also had a .622 batting average, scored 19 runs, had five doubles, three homers and 17 RBIs.

Erin Carney

Andale-Garden Plain

Senior catcher

Carney, a three-year starter at first base, switched to catcher to fill a hole and proved herself well. Carney, who hit around .400, had strong relationships with Andale-Garden Plain's pitchers, and was a vocal leader for the Class 5A champs, who were 24-1.

Sydnee Eck

Andale-Garden Plain

Sophomore pitcher

Eck had big shoes to fill in replacing three-time All-Metro selection Karley Schmelzer as the No. 1 pitcher. Eck did well in leading Andale-Garden Plain to the 5A title. She averaged nine strikeouts, had 10 shutouts and pitched all three state tourney games.

Kelsey Jones

Bishop Carroll

Junior outfielder

Jones was Carroll's top hitter — she hit over .600 and had three homers — and was a strong defensive presence in the outfield. She helped lead Carroll to a 20-5 record and second place in the Class 5A tournament.

Haley McGregor

Wichita Independent

Senior middle infielder

McGregor, a four-time All-Metro selection, has signed to play at Oklahoma. While Independent struggled this season, McGregor shined with a .509 batting average, .606 on-base percentage and had four home runs while committing two errors at shortstop.

Taylor Parsons

Mulvane

Senior pitcher

Parsons led Mulvane to the Class 4A title game and a 22-4 record. She had 13 shutouts, including two in the 4A tournament, averaged eight strikeouts and had a 0.93 ERA. Parsons also threw a perfect game and five one-hitters.

Devon McCreath

Maize

Junior third baseman

McCreath had a .448 batting average, a .725 slugging percentage and three homers, four triples and seven doubles. She also had 28 RBIs and 35 runs as she helped lead Maize to a 22-3 record, the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division I title and the Class 6A title.

Mac Millspaugh

Northwest

Junior middle infielder

Millspaugh probably is most known for her talent on the mound _ she threw a perfect game, had a 0.78 ERA, and had 139 strikeouts. But she also was a standout shortstop, committing one error as she led Northwest to the 6A tourney and a 16-0 City League record.

Laura Seeman

Maize

Junior designated hitter

Seeman was part of a great lineup — she hit .479, one of six players batting over .400 — but she stood out with five homers, 29 RBIs, 21 runs, five triples, six doubles and a team-high .916 slugging percentage. She also had a .507 on-base percentage and struck out six times.

Sydney Stuever

Andale-Garden Plain

Junior outfielder

Stuever's speed was a crucial factor for Andale-Garden Plain, which won the Class 5A title. Stuever, a two-time All-Metro selection, could beat out a bunt — she hit over .500 at leadoff —and had such range in the outfield that she kept baserunners in check.

Tricia Vogel

Clearwater

Senior utility

Vogel, a two-time All-Metro selection, played catcher and first base. She also hit .483, had a .603 on-base percentage, 29 RBIs, eight doubles and committed two errors.

Jenny Meirowsky

Maize

Coach

In her fifth season, Meirowsky led Maize to a 22-3 record, the AV-CTL I title and the Class 6A title, the Eagles' first since winning Class 5A in 1998 — when Meirowsky was on the team. Meirowsky is 90-25; Maize finished second in 2006.
