One singular sensation
A look at the five others to win a state track and field team championship by themselves:
1953: Melvin Coates, Mullinville _ Coates won the 120-yard hurdles and 180 hurdles and finished second in the 220, carrying Mullinville to the Class B title with 14 points. Johnson High had 12.
1960: Jerry Kinnamon, Sylvia _ He won all three Class B sprints for 15 points, good enough for a team title that was four points better than Cheney. His sons, Clint and Kurt, are Kansas high school basketball coaches, and granddaughter Kaley is a sophomore sprinter at McPherson.
1966: Roger Timken, Cimarron _ Timken won his three events _ 220, 120 hurdles, 180 hurdles _ for 18 team points, two more than Frontenac in Class B.
1975: Mike Tilson, Norwich _ On the same day Lorraine Davidson won by herself for Buhler, Tilson did the same for Norwich in Class 1A. Tilson won the 100, 220 and 180 hurdles, giving him 18 points to Fowler High's 15.
1983: Mac Johnson, Deerfield _ Maybe the most difficult of all six single-handed winners because in '83, winners got 32.2 percent of an event's points, less than previous years. Johnson won the 100, 200 and 400 meters, giving Deerfield 30 1A team points to Bucklin's 28.
