Quick recovery for Owls’ Hubert

GARDEN PLAIN — Running track is something Garden Plain senior Camille Hubert probably shouldn’t be doing this spring.

After blowing out her knee last fall, Hubert could have taken the spring off to heal and protect her volleyball scholarship to Fort Hays State. That wasn’t an option for Hubert.

“I knew it would only help my knee get better,” she said. “It’s more running, but it will always help get you back in shape.”

Hubert ran legs on the Owls’ 400- and 1600-meter relay teams that qualified for state at the Class 3A regional at Garden Plain on Friday night. The only sign of the injury is the bulky knee brace she wears.

“It feels really good right now,” Hubert said. “I don’t feel a limp. It feels great and it doesn’t hurt or anything.”

Conway Springs qualified seven girls and all three relay teams while winning the girls’ team title; Garden Plain won the boys’ title and will send nine individuals and two of its relay teams.

Along with Ashley Koester (four-event qualifier), thrower Kim Holt scored big points for the Cardinals. Holt won the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 3¾ inches, placed second in the discus and qualified in javelin, which came as a surprise.

“I’m pretty excited,” Holt said. “I was really scared about this regional because it’s so tough. I was really nervous because there are a lot of good girls in the javelin this year. I just got lucky with one of my throws.”

Garden Plain’s Kurt Pauly delivered 30 points with wins in the 100, 200 and 400, but the Owls secured the title with their jumps. They scored 36 points and qualified four jumpers, including Blake Withrow, who won the long jump with a leap of 21-1½.

“I put in a lot of work over the offseason in the weight room,” Withrow said. “It feels really rewarding. I knew when I landed that it was a good jump.”

Pauly set school records in the 100 (10.69 hand-timed) and 200 (21.78) and anchored the 1600 relay, which set a school record with its time of 3:27.95.

“I ran against the best in Kansas every meet, which prepares me for my regionals and my state,” Pauly said.

The night’s most impressive performance may have come from the 400 boys relay team from Lyons, which remained unbeaten on the season after winning the race in a time of 43.38.

The team consists of seniors Robbie Biehler, Colton Deutsch and Jake Craig and junior Michael Vincent.

“We’re like brothers,” said Robbie Biehler, who anchors the team. “We have so much trust in each other.”
