Southeast’s Calloway overcomes track disappointment

Southeast sprinter Steven Calloway entered the final of the boys 100 meters at Friday’s Class 6A track regional at Northwest with the best qualifying time. He and coaches were confident that he would be top sprinter coming out of the regional.

However, a split second mistake in the final — a false start — cost the sophomore a chance at qualifying for state in his best event.

Calloway left the track upset and disappointed, but came back in his next event motivated. He used that motivation to set a personal best in the 400, finishing a close second behind South’s Jante Glenn (49.6) by running a 49.9.

“A lot of people talked to me and told me to just calm down and relax and not get so frustrated or mad, because it would mess up my form,” Calloway said. “So I just relaxed and ran my race. I PR’d for state. Hopefully I can make it to the finals.”

Calloway said he’d been running that race in the 50-second range for about three years, so to break that barrier under Friday’s circumstances felt great. He also qualified for the state meet in the 200, finishing behind Derby’s Cameron Cornelius (22.4).

Southeast turned in a successful night as a unit — both the boys and girls teams took first. The boys ran away with it by scoring 137 points, and the girls team got plenty of help from its sprinters and needed it to edge Goddard by half a point for the title.

The girls 400 relay team carried the torch again for Southeast. After blazing through the first three legs, Jamillah Bonner received the baton on the home stretch with nobody around her. Despite the lead, she ran like she heard footsteps and the team finished in 47.5, the best time in the state.

The team’s first leg, Kerisha Broadus, said she knew they were going to break the 48 second mark, and Dana Gates added that they plan on improving that time next week.

Northwest’s Robbie Martinez-Garcia qualified for state in both the 800 (first place, 1:57.3) and 1600, and said he’s confident heading into next week.

“I feel better than I have all year. Today I really wasn’t worried about time. I just wanted to qualify,” Martinez-Garcia said. “The 800 was a race that I wanted to come out and run a good time in, and I did. So I feel sure about my self going into state.”
