ALL-STATE BOYS
PERRY ELLIS 6-8, so., Wichita Heights Stats: Ellis, a two-time All-State selection, led Heights to a 23-2 record and the Falcons second straight Class 6A title. Teams focused their defenses specifically on slowing Ellis, yet he still averaged 22.2 points and 10.5 rebounds. He also spent more time on the perimeter, where he shot 35 percent from three-point range, and also showed off his ballhandling skills. He has scored more than 1,000 career points. Pre-tournament mens NCAA pick: Kansas Most memorable moment: Winning state again, because (winning two straight) hasnt been accomplished much. Role model: LeBron James. I just like the way he carries himself and watching him is fun. He seems real cool. Hes just exciting to watch. Favorite pastime outside of basketball: Video games. I like to play shooting games, army games. And all on X-Box. Coach Joe Auer: The thing with Perry is his consistency. To average a double-double is all about consistency and effort. He has to have a tremendous effort every night because hes the focal point of every defense that we encounter. The thing I marveled at this year again is his ability to maintain that steadiness. Theres not a lot of up and down with his effort level.
REESE HOLLIDAY 6-3, sr., KC Sumner Stats: Holliday led Sumner to the Class 4A title and a 22-4 record while averaging 23.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists and shooting 66 percent from the field. Holliday averaged a double-double for three straight seasons. At 215 pounds, he could post up or run the point and score from the perimeter. College: Wisconsin-Green Bay Pre-tournament mens NCAA pick: Syracuse Most memorable moment: Winning the 4A title. Ive been waiting for so long. We made it to state three years and Ive been waiting. Ive never felt nothing like that in my mind, Ive never been that happy. Role model: Mom, LeAndra. Shes pretty much my hero. Shes been there for me my whole life. Thats my inspiration. I love my mom so much. Favorite pastime outside of basketball: Chill, be with my friends, you know. Pretty much basketball, though, Its what I do. Im always in the gym. Coach Dan Parra: He could play a lot of positions for us, on the wing, on the perimeter. He could create shots for him and his teammates. Wed put him on the block, too, because he has so many moves down low. Hes so strong that he can score in a variety of ways, and hes a great, great rebounder.
TREVOR RELEFORD 6-0, sr., Bishop Miege Stats: Releford is a two-time All-State selection, just like his brother, Travis. Trevor Releford led Miege to a 25-0 record and the Class 5A title. Releford is quick quick getting up court and to the basket and quick on defense. He averaged 18.2 points, 6.2 assists and 2.4 steals. He is 89-8 in four seasons. College: Alabama Pre-tournament mens NCAA pick: Kansas Most memorable moment: Going 25-0. No one can be better than that. They can always do the same, but they cant out-do you. Role model: Older brothers Travis and Tracy. I basically looked at them when I was growing up. They were good, so I wanted to be just like them. Favorite pastime outside of basketball: Video games. X-Box 360. I play NCAA basketball. I like video games because its sports. And you can continue that, talking trash, being competitive. Coach Rick Zych: As a point guard, it kind of all goes through him, and its been that way for four years.æ.æ.æ. He came in as a little, skinny freshman and in the backseat from his brother (Travis) and hes made himself into a player.æ.æ.æ. His outside shot has improved, and hes gotten bigger and stronger physically.
ALEX SANTIAGO 6-0, sr., Burrton Stats: Santiago led the state in scoring average (29.0). He also set a boys state tournament record with 53 points in the Class 1A quarterfinals. A versatile player, Santiago averaged 5.1 steals, 4.1 assists and 8.9 rebounds. He shot 78.6 percent from the free-throw line, 50.7 percent from two-point range. College: Undecided Pre-tournament mens NCAA pick: Syracuse Most memorable moment: Scoring 53 points. It was unexpected. I wasnt going in there for the points, I was going in there just to play. It just happened and it was exciting. Role model: Reggie Miller. His attitude towards the game and how he reacts to the crowd and other players. He has a no-fear mentality, which I like about him. He has that scoring mentality and he hits big shots in pressure situations. Favorite pastime outside of basketball: Play basketball.æ.æ.æ. I just like working hard and its going to pay off later. I go to the gym and work out and play basketball. Coach Ralph Butler: He did pretty much everything, to be quite honest. He was definitely our leader, and he worked extremely hard.æ.æ.æ. He likes to penetrate. Hed get several baskets off steals and he did a really good job of getting offensive rebounds and putting the ball back in.
WILL SPRADLING 6-2, sr., SM South Stats: Spradling, a four-year starter, had a slow start to the season as he recovered from a broken leg. But he finished the season averaging 20.1 points, 5.7 assists and 6.1 rebounds. He scored 34 points in SM Souths quarterfinal loss in the Class 6A tournament. College: Kansas State Pre-tournament mens NCAA pick: Kansas State Most memorable moment: Its definitely winning (the Sunflower) league and going to state. I had a blast all year this year. Winning, its special on its own. Role model: Pete Maravich. He died before I was born, but I liked to watch his game tape. Id watch his stuff and try to mimic it. I liked his passing abilities. Thats by far my favorite, the passes he made. Thats one of the main reasons Im a better passer than I used to be. Favorite pastime outside of basketball: Outside of basketball I like to play beach volleyball a lot, and I hang out. I play X-Box some, not too much, though. Coach Brett McFall: Hes got a knack for the ball; its something you cant teach. If its a loose ball and in the area, he was getting it. Hes the type of point guard, where everyone thinks hes a great scorer, but I know hed rather get a ton of assists. He sees the floor so well; he sees the play before it happens.
RICK ZYCH Coach, Bishop Miege Zych, 49, led Miege to a 25-0 record and the Class 5A title. He has spent 14 seasons at Miege, his fourth coaching stop. He is 282-55 at Miege, 89-8 the past four seasons. Zychs teams have finished first twice, second four times, third four times and fourth once. Senior guard Trevor Releford: Hes a down-to-earth guy. Hes competitive, really. He helped us stay focused and kept us motivated to getting better and better every day.
