Argonia girls reach Class 1A title game

Advancing to their first championship game, the Argonia girls swept by St. Paul 47-30 in Thursday's Class 1A tournament semifinal at Gross Coliseum in Hays.

Argonia (27-0) will play fellow unbeaten South Gray in today's final. South Gray (27-0) defeated St. John 34-30 in the other semifinal.

The South Gray boys also advanced to today's championship, holding off Quinter 49-46.

Defending boys champion Hanover defeated Baileyville 47-35 to round out the finalists.

Ashton Stansbury scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Argonia girls, who trailed 13-9 after one quarter.

The Raiders outscored St. Paul 30-13 in the second half, capitalizing on 13-of-17 free-throw shooting.

Allison Brewster and Davi Peetoom each scored 11 for the second-seeded Raiders.

In knocking off defending champion St. John, South Gray advanced to its third consecutive championship.

Kayla Thomas scored 16 and Mikayla Skidmore added 14 for the Rebels. St. John's Teresa Wade scored 13 and grabbed nine rebounds.

Chase Clancy scored with 30 seconds to go to give the South Gray boys the lead against Quinter.

A Garrison Hendricks steal helped secure the win for South Gray (26-1), which advanced to its third title game in four seasons. The Rebels won 1A in 2007 and 2008.

Clancy finished with 14 points, and Ricky Friesen led South Gray with 16.

Charles Alexander's 15 points and 11 rebounds led Hanover to its third straight 1A championship game.

The Wildcats trailed Baileyville 15-11 after one quarter, but outscored the Falcons 27-10 over the next two quarters. Conner Hynek scored 11 and recorded five assists for Hanover.
