Top 11 and All-Class teams are selected by The Wichita Eagle with the help of football coaches across Kansas.
Every coach in the state is mailed a ballot to return to The Eagle by the end of the season. Coaches may nominate their own players and players from other teams. They also are asked to supply statistics and comment on players they nominate.
The teams are selected by Joanna Chadwick, Jonathan Long and Matt Browning. They tabulate nominations from the ballots and get additional input from coaches and other media members.
Top 11 teams are selected regardless of position, while All-Class teams are selected by position.

BLAKE BELL QB, Bishop Carroll 6-6, 215, Senior
„øBell has made an oral commitment to Oklahoma and is considered one of the country’s top three quarterbacks. „øA two-time Top 11 player, he led Carroll to an 11-1 record and the Class 5A semifinals. He accounted for nine touchdowns in one game. „øWith an untested group of receivers, he completed 237 of 356 passes (66.6 percent) for 2,752 yards, had 32 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also had 839 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns.
Carroll coach Alan Schuckman: “At district time, he became a focal point, not just in our passing game, but our running game. .æ.æ. He made so many good decisions on passes _ 356 passes and just five interceptions, That’s amazing. Last year he had some really talented receivers around him, which I think made him better. This year I think he made his receivers better.”
B.J. FINNEY OL, Andale 6-5, 275, Senior
„øFinney, a three-year starter who is also a talented wrestler, was a key in Andale rushing for more than 4,000 yards this season. „øHe helped lead Andale to the Class 4A quarterfinals and an 11-1 record. „øAndale ran behind him on almost every play because of his ability to clear the way for the running backs. When teams started putting more players on Finney’s side, that’s when Andale went the other way.
Andale coach Gary O’Hair: “He’s probably the ideal kid you would hope for on the offensive line — good size, good feet, he’s intelligent, he plays hard and he’s a great leader.æ.æ.æ. He’s a three-year starter, and not many of them out here get to start their sophomore year. He brought experience this season, and it’s always easy on the coach when your best player is a leader.”
JAMES FRANKLIN RB, Olathe North 5-8, 185, Senior
„øFranklin is part of a long line of outstanding running backs from Olathe North, including Darren Sproles, now with the San Diego Chargers. But Franklin passed Sproles’ numbers this season. „øFranklin had a school-record 2,803 rushing yards on 331 carries for 31 touchdowns. In three seasons, he set the school record with 5,916 rushing yards. „øLed Olathe North to a 13-0 record and the Class 6A title game, rushing for 269 yards and three touchdowns in the championship game.
Olathe North coach Pete Flood: “He’s got great vision, he has excellent balance and he’s very strong. He runs very hard. He’s got speed that, he’s fast enough to go score when he’s loose. I know that he was somebody (opponents) had to account for all the time and that opened things up. But we still found a way to get yards and do things for him offensively.”
JUSTIN GOETZ DL, Hutchinson 6-1, 208, Senior
„øA three-year starter for Hutchinson, which won its sixth straight title, including the last two in Class 5A. The Salthawks finished 13-0. „øGoetz was a key to that defense. He had 79 tackles, 52 unassisted, 23 for loss, 9½ sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He also had three interceptions — all three were returned for touchdowns. „øAn athlete playing defensive end, teams struggled to run at him because he was so fast and powerful.
Hutchinson coach Randy Dreiling: “He’s one of those rare players that you can’t get outside of him. He’s so fast that you can’t reach him. He’s powerful enough and it’s hard to run at him.æ.æ.æ. He’s a great athlete. We don’t put big, heavy guys up there; he’s an athlete playing defensive end.”
BLAKE JABLONSKI QB, Wichita Collegiate 6-2, 195, Senior
„øJablonski is part of a rare undefeated streak. In March he was a key to Collegiate winning the Class 3A basketball title with an undefeated record. Last week he led the Spartans to an undefeated season in 3A football. „øHe threw for 3,884 yards, completed 238 of 379 passes (62.8 percent), and had 48 touchdowns. His yardage and touchdown totals are state records. „øAn intelligent quarterback, he consistently stayed in the pocket running down his receivers’ patterns so he could make the best play.
Collegiate coach Bill Messamore: “It wasn’t so much that he had a strong arm, but he was accurate.æ.æ.æ. He could make the downfield throws, of course, but it was just his ability to find people that were open.æ.æ.æ. His ability to stay consistent all year long was key. Very seldom did he have a bad game.”
JUSTIN MCCAY WR/DB, Bishop Miege 6-4, 200, Senior
„øMcCay, also a standout basketball player who led the Stags to the Class 5A title game in March, has made an oral commitment to Oklahoma. „øMcCay led Miege to a 12-2 record and the Class 4A title, the Stags’ first in 33 seasons. „øMcCay, who had 926 receiving yards, scored touchdowns five ways, including 15 receiving, and three on kickoff and punt returns. He also had 252 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Miege coach Tim Grunhard: “Justin is a once-in-a-lifetime, once-in-a-coaching career, player. Every time he caught the ball, he had an opportunity to score. Really, over the last two years, every four times he had the ball, he scored. It’s not a one year or one game, it’s consistently, whether he was on offense, special teams, running the ball, catching the ball. He’s just a special, special player.”
CAMERON MCCLAIN OL, Gardner-Edgerton 6-3, 284, Senior
„øA three-year starter, he led Gardner-Edgerton to the Class 5A title game and a 12-1 record. It was Gardner-Edgerton’s first trip to the state final. „øHe moved to pretty much every position on the offensive line during the season — and during games. „øMcClain was the primary focus of the Blazers’ offense that gained an average of 459 yards.
Gardner-Edgerton coach Marvin Diener: “He’s a very good technician. We did lots of different styles of blocks and things. If it was a combo block or whatever, he was very consistent. He just got stronger and better through his career. He’s one of the best linemen I’ve coached.æ.æ.æ. We just went his way all the time. We moved him all over because we really wanted to get good matchups. We used him against their best people or moved him around to get mismatches.”
JORDEN ODEN RB, Buhler 5-8, 205, Senior
„øOden had 2,562 rushing yards on 212 carries, and also had 38 rushing touchdowns, three receiving touchdowns and one kickoff returned for a touchdown. „øHe led Buhler to an 11-2 record and the Class 4A semifinals. Oden broke his collarbone in the quarterfinals, ending his season. „øOden, a three-year starter, was a strong running back — he squats 460 pounds — and has powerful legs.
Buhler coach Steve Warner: “He’s just so explosive. He sees the hole, he hits the hole and he was able to out-run people, juke people, run over people. His strength was fun to watch. I’m not sure if he ever got hit and went backward. He was always falling forward and getting the extra yard.æ.æ.æ. He has very strong legs, and a low center of gravity, so he was tough to stop.”
DEMARCUS ROBINSON RB, Wichita Northwest 5-8, 195, Senior
„øRobinson, who has made an oral commitment to Kansas State and is one of 6A’s top sprinters, led Northwest to a 7-3 record. „øHe finished with 1,720 rushing yards, despite being hobbled by an ankle injury for the last few games of the season. He had a chance to break the City League rushing record set by Wichita East’s Bryce Brown in 2008, but decided to save his ankle for the postseason. „øHe’s so quick that anytime he got the ball, he could break it for a touchdown.
Wichita Northwest coach Weston Schartz: “He has great vision and sprinter speed and toughness. There’s a lot of sprinters that aren’t tough. He developed that toughness. He’s the guy that made us go. .æ.æ. He played with small injuries for two years, had a broken hand last year. He was beat up very game and never griped about it.”
JOSH SMITH RB, Hutchinson 5-10, 215, Senior
„øSmith had 215 carries for 1,933 rushing yards and led Hutchinson to its sixth straight state title and an undefeated season. „øNicknamed Moose, Smith is a bruiser who often ran through and over defenders. „øSmith also had speed. The defense might hit him, but he’d spin off a would-be tackler and outrace the defense to the end zone.
Hutchinson coach Randy Dreiling: “What I love is watching the punishment that he’d hand out to tacklers. It wears on the defense, and some of those guys would have to play offense and take punishment on the offensive side. But they’re getting punished (by Smith) on the defense. He’s a powerful, punishing, bruising running back. He has tremendous moves. There’s no question in my mind that he’s a Division I football player.”
LUCAS VINCENT DL, Olathe North 6-3, 285, Senior
„øVincent led Olathe North’s defense, consistently disrupting and frustrating opposing offenses. He has made an oral commitment to Missouri. „øHe had 40 tackles, 17 for loss, six forced fumbles and four sacks. In his career, he had 110 tackles, 35 for loss and 18 sacks. „øHe led Olathe North to a 13-0 record and the Class 6A title. It was Olathe North’s first title since 2003. In the title game, Vincent had five tackles for loss.
Olathe North coach Pete Flood: “Whether we played him at end, like we did quite a bit, or at nose guard, you had to account for him with a couple people. He was one of those guys who changed the game in regards to the way they had to approach and account for him.”
BILL MESSAMORE Coach, Wichita Collegiate
„øMessamore has been Collegiate’s coach for five seasons and is 45-10 after finishing an undefeated season with a victory in the Class 3A title game. „øHe has coached football for 29 years, including eight seasons as a Collegiate assistant. „øCollegiate won the 3A title with a high-powered offense, as well as some tough defense.
Wichita Collegiate quarterback Blake Jablonski: “He was a great coach. He knows football and he knows how to run the spread offense. Almost every day I was in his office, looking at the defensive strategy, what they might do to stop us. He helped me with that, he showed me (for example) what man might be open on this play.æ.æ.æ. After we won the state championship, you could see in his face that he loved every minute of it.”
